As I reflect on my decade-long journey with Stella May Contracting, Inc.,
I'm struck by the delicate balance we've maintained between honoring our fundamentals and embracing the future.
In an industry as foundational as heavy civil construction, it's easy to stick to what's tried and true, yet as we all know true excellence comes from blending time-tested practices with cutting-edge innovations.
Here's what this looks like for us ⏩
We've grown to over 275 employees, each bringing unique skills and perspectives.
Our commitment to their growth, diversity and education is expanding as well.
We've ventured into new territories, like our recent foray into electric overhead work.
Diversification keeps us agile and relevant.
As the largest minority-owned heavy civil construction company in the region and a proud employer through the Civics Works program, we're creating opportunities across Baltimore, Washington, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
While we value traditional skills, we're also integrating new technologies to enhance safety, efficiency, and quality.
The key to our success?
Remembering that at its core, our business is about people - our team, our clients, and our community.
We're not just building infrastructure; we're building futures.
As we continue on this path of growth, I'm excited to see how we'll further blend the old with the new, with our mission to "safely serve and shine" at the forefront.
I'm excited for new opportunities.

Engineering and Construction Manager at Joint Municipal Water and Sewer Commission
Happy to see work progressing on our Bluefield Regional Pump Station! This station is vital to providing sewer service to lower Lexington County. In conjunction with this project, we have five other projects being completed simultaneously via separate contracts with three different engineering firms, including one project in partnership with a private developer. All six projects must all be completed prior to the opening of the new South Lake Elementary School in August. Big shout outs to Hazen, AECOM, Civil Engineering of Columbia, GHD, Shady Grove Construction, McMahan Bros Construction, LAD Construction, Wiley Easton Construction, Patrick Chambers and Ben Kelly!
One team with unparalleled global resources, dedicated to serving North America’s great communities.
We are excited to announce the next evolution of our business! This morning, our parent company announced the combination of its two civil engineering and construction groups in the North American market under the name Flatiron Dragados. This integration of Flatiron with Dragados USA, Inc. and Dragados Canada, Inc. to form ‘Flatiron Dragados’ creates the second largest heavy civil engineering and construction company in the United States with more than 7,000 employees and $6.1B in annual revenues.
Peter Davoren will serve as Chairman of the new company. Davoren will continue to serve as Chairman, CEO & President of Turner Construction Company. Javier Sevilla Roca, current CEO of Flatiron, will serve as CEO of the new company.
This strong new organization with amazing talent, enhanced resources and broad capabilities is ready to enhance its delivery of critical infrastructure projects—bringing even greater value to our clients and the communities where we work across the United States and Canada.
We are looking forward to a bright future!

#CICM celebrates the many opportunities available in the construction industry, and we are wrapping up this annual celebration by featuring another of our talented team members who is celebrating his 12-year anniversary with Wier, Frank Rodriguez. Frank joined the Wier team as an experienced professional, having supervised the construction of a variety of commercial buildings over his 27-year career. As a superintendent, Frank spends most of his time “reviewing the current work in progress and forecasting the day's completed tasks with respect to what needs to happen tomorrow, next week, and the week after that — always looking ahead.” And, while he admits that this daily procedure is “very time-consuming,” Frank has “met many interesting people” in his role as field superintendent. In fact, his natural rapport with people— “whether they are a laborer, crew leader, business owner, architect, or engineer”—is what has contributed to his longevity in the industry. In addition to having good people skills, “having a strong understanding of how to decipher blueprints” is equally important. Frank thinks that infrastructure construction is likely an important area for growth in the short-term. He also notes that technology advances are making the construction process more efficient. Frank recounted his excitement during the Ron Hoover RV and Marine project, which was “the first time [he’d] seen a detention pond get created without driving a single surveying lath stake in place” because of GPS technology. If you’re thinking of applying for a job in construction, rest assured that it's more than just a “job” – it’s a “career,” and those who enter the industry are improving our local communities and building the world.
