Keynote speech by Deputy Director General DG MOVE Herald Ruijters opens the second day of the Florence Summer School on Transport Regulation. Is Europe sufficiently resilient for geopolitics and climate? The recent crisis (COVID, Ukraine, climate events) have shown loopholes in EU transport regulation. What is the way forward? Fine tuning of regulation is necessary, new instruments might be explored (resiliency funds, PSO-type obligations, etc), but at the end of the day investment in infrastructure will be necessary (redundancies, adaptations)... Who should pay for a more resilient transport system? More discussions along the day on digitalization of transport (session on mobility data space and MDMS) and presentations by Pauline Aymonier, Alexander Ernert, Benjamin Ledwon, on Air Traffic Management regulation with Regula Dettling-Ott, Matthias Finger, Nicola Volta, evolutions in rail regulation with Russell Pittman, Jordan CARTIER and @paul cazan, and labor issues in aviation with Jacomo Restellini, Andrea Trimarchi and Yuran Shi Steven Truxal, Aurore Laget-Annamayer, Elodie P., Irina Lapenkova

This looks like a great report but I find the whole embrace of electric helicopters so at odds with just about everything cities should be doing to address climate change—full tree canopy, more active transport and circular economies, etc etc. The aviation we need (airships) are nowhere to be seen. Instead all this high-energy intensity stuff flying overhead. The old me would have been excited about this, but now it just feels like planning enabling yet another painful and unsustainable restructuring. What exactly is the problem this technology solves for society?

"The European Commission welcomes the final adoption of the Regulation underpinning the trans-European #transport network (TEN-T) by the European Parliament and the Council. The revised Regulation significantly enhances EU efforts to build a #sustainable and #resilient network as the backbone of the internal market. This includes strong incentives to promote more sustainable transport modes, advance #digitalisation, and improve #multimodality – combining various transport modes in a single journey within the European transport system.
