I have growing concerns where counselling and psychotherapy is going. The convenience of online work should be considered carefully. If it continues to become the norm, future therapists may lose the value of what room based therapy offers beyond a computer screen. I hope this never happens. I am very much drawn to the words of Geoff Goldblum’s character Ian Malcolm, in Jurassic Park when he says: “Your scientists were so preoccupied about whether they could, they didn’t stop to think about whether they should”. Of course clients have a range of needs and convenience is a consideration but the online boom and the growing area of AI needs to be watched carefully. There is a real danger of face to face therapy becoming secondary to online and we need to think long and hard about what is lost by choosing convenience. There is often a delay between what is said and the other person hearing. Sometimes this creates talking over eachother. Vision is delayed through a screen. These things matter with the rhythm of therapy and how connection is formed and maintained. Most clients feel like change is impossible. This is because they have been stuck in a holding pattern when it comes to their problematic situation.
