📢 On Thursday, April 18th, Dr. Spyridon Economou, Director General of Eunice #Hydrogen Technologies, participated in an exclusive meeting in Heraklion, with all #EU #Ambassadors in #Greece, arranged by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Athens. Honoring the invitation to Eunice, extended by H.E. the Ambassador of #Belgium, Mr. Marc Calcoen, Dr. Economou, as the keynote speaker, presented the insights of the groundbreaking potential of the Crete Aegean Hydrogen Valley - CRAVE H2 European project in spearheading the green energy transition, with positive social and environmental impacts. 💡 About the Project: The CRAVE-H2 Project (Ref no 101112169-HORIZON-JTI-CLEANH2-2022-2, funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and the European Union) aims to decarbonize the electricity grid and the transportation sector by establishing a "Green Hydrogen Valley" in the Atherinolakkos area in Lasithi on the Island of Crete. This innovative European cross-border project utilizes low-cost green electricity, transferred to Greece from Egypt by the Greece-Africa Interconnector (GAP, TYNDP 2024 entso-e Project with ref. no 1048). By leveraging renewable energy and the clean hydrogen energy vector, CRAVE-H2 is enabling local communities toward a sustainable future. A consortium led by Nelson Mandela University and Ikigai Group has won a UK Government grant under the South Africa-UK PACT programme to deliver an innovative feasibility study to explore the viability of Green Hydrogen Production and Export Infrastructure from South Africa's Eastern Cape region to global markets, including the UK, Europe, and Japan. Green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources, offers a clean and versatile alternative to conventional fossil fuels. The feasibility study will evaluate the potential for establishing green hydrogen production facilities in South Africa's Eastern Cape region and developing the necessary infrastructure for export, including port facilities and transportation networks. Stakeholder engagement will be integral to the process, to ensure alignment with local communities, government agencies, and industry partners. 💶🚀 Brussels approves 1.4 billion in state aid in Spain and six other countries for hydrogen refuelling. 🔗 #Hydrogen #StateAid #IPCEI #SustainableMobility #Infrastructure #Europe 🏛️ The IPCEI ‘Hy2Move’ complements the three previous EC-approved hydrogen value chain projects. 🇪🇺 The European Commission (EC) has approved state aid worth up to €1.4 billion granted by Spain and six other Member States for the fourth Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) to support the deployment of hydrogen infrastructure in the mobility and transport sectors. 🌍 The project, called ‘Hy2Move’, involves Spain, Germany, Slovakia, Estonia, France, Italy and the Netherlands, which will provide up to €1.4 billion in public funding, which is expected to unlock a further €3.3 billion in private investment. 🏢 A total of 11 companies with activities in one or more Member States are involved in this project, including small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups, which will undertake 13 innovative projects. ⚡ This is how Brussels wants to accelerate the ‘permitting’ of renewable, grid, storage and hydrogen projects in the EU. 🔋 ‘Hy2Move’ will cover the development of hydrogen production technologies for mobility and transport applications, in particular to supply refuelling stations with pressurised hydrogen with 99.99% purity. 🌐 Details: https://bit.ly/4bNHdQS .

New Study Looks to Eastern Cape For Green Hydrogen Feasibility The Eastern Cape has become the new focus of South Africa's green hydrogen plans. The province is at the centre of a feasibility study to assess the potential for the production and export of green hydrogen. Green hydrogen is produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources and is a clean and versatile alternative to conventional fossil fuels. Green hydrogen will be in increasingly high demand as countries aim to reduce carbon emissions. The study will be carried out by a consortium led by Nelson Mandela University (NMU) and boutique consultancy firm Ikigai Group. Developed in collaboration with GIZ Tunisie, GFA Consulting Group GmbH, and ALCOR-Développeur d'avenir durable, the strategy aims to harness green hydrogen for sustainable economic growth and a decarbonised economy, outlining Tunisia's vision for integrating green hydrogen into key sectors such as industry, transport, and energy. Some key highlights: 🏗 To meet the aggregated demand (local market and export) of 8.3 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫, the strategy outlines the need to 𝐞𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 to support the distribution and utilisation of hydrogen and its derivatives. This includes the development of new gas pipelines, a "Tunisian Hydrogen Backbone," which will facilitate the efficient transport of hydrogen across the country. Additionally, improvements to the electricity network are necessary to integrate renewable energy sources and ensure a reliable supply for hydrogen production. 💰 The strategy identifies 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 to achieve its goals. By 2050, an estimated 120 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐬 will be needed to develop the hydrogen sector in Tunisia. These investments are expected to drive economic growth and improve the trade balance, create jobs, and enhance the country's energy security, all in the framework of a Just Energy Transition. The funding is expected to come from a mix of public and private sources, including international financial institutions, government budget, and private sector investments. I was invited to share my experience at the AERAP session organised by DLR on "Connecting Global Priorities: How to Build a Sustainable Long-term African-European Partnership for Renewable Energies? " African countries are serious about investing in renewable energy. South Africa, for example, started with the development of a Hydrogen Strategy in 2006, with a "National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Research, Development, and Innovation Strategy" published in May 2007. I  was part of the Strategy Working Group whose objective was to prepare a strategic framework for publicly funded R&D in Hydrogen and Fuel Cell (H&FC) Technologies to position South Africa to play a role in the emerging energy economy in which hydrogen was predicted to play a significant role. While a transition to renewable energy is the global goal, energy access remains the priority in Africa. The continent needs energy to close the gap in terms of income and welfare, between the region and the rest of the world, for global convergence. In this context, the African Common Position on Energy Access and Just Energy Transition adopted on 22 July 2022 by the African Union (AU) Executive Council states that “Africa will continue to deploy all forms of its abundant energy resources, including renewable and non-renewable energy to address energy demand.” The Africa-Europe partnership is critical to taking forward Research and innovation as a key driver for the green transition in Africa and Europe.
