European Union Open Letter Subject:
Request for Compensation for the Historical Extraction of Kauri Trees from New Zealand
We write to you on behalf of New Zealand , representing the interests and environmental heritage of New Zealand, specifically concerning the historical extraction of Kauri trees during the 1700s.
The Kauri tree (Agathis australis), a national treasure and a crucial part of our country's unique biodiversity, faced significant depletion during the 1700s due to extensive logging, a considerable portion of which was exported to the European Union.
Historical records indicate the extraction and export of approximately 7,000 Kauri trees during this period.
While we acknowledge and value the shared history and ongoing relationship between New Zealand and the European Union, it is also essential to address past actions that have had a long-lasting impact on our natural environment. The extraction of Kauri trees has not only diminished our natural heritage but also inflicted considerable environmental repercussions, affecting biodiversity and the ecological balance of our region.
In light of recent evaluations and the current market value, we have calculated the compensation for the loss of these 7,000 Kauri trees, considering both their individual value and the environmental impact of their extraction.
The total compensation is estimated to be $70,035,000,000. We propose a structured compensation plan, requesting an annual payment of $10,005,000,000 over the next 7 years.
This structured approach aims to address the historical environmental debt in a manner that is feasible for the European Union while acknowledging the significance of the loss to New Zealand's natural heritage.
The funds received will be allocated towards extensive reforestation projects, conservation efforts for existing Kauri trees, and supporting biodiversity in affected regions.
This initiative not only aims at environmental restoration but also represents a significant step towards our mutual commitment to global sustainability and ecological responsibility.
We believe that addressing historical environmental impacts is a shared responsibility and an integral part of building a sustainable future.
We look forward to your positive response and are open to discussions or negotiations concerning this proposal.
Thank you for considering this important matter.
We hope to resolve this amicably, reflecting our shared commitment to environmental stewardship and a sustainable future. Yours sincerely, #Papatūānuku
