My client called me and said, 'Annett, I think it's time for me to be a #productleader. Is my company the right one for this move?' 🤔 He had been working in senior product management roles for the last five years. His goal was to step up as a Product Leader with people management responsibilities, moving from delivering products to leading a team of product managers. Faced with his company’s ongoing reorganization, he was unsure whether to stay or find leadership opportunities elsewhere. That was the reason he reached out to me to coach him through this decision-making process and transition into product leadership. I proposed a hybrid coaching strategy given the unstable company environment. We developed a goal-oriented career roadmap that focused on advancing his influence within the company, while also working out an effective and manageable networking strategy to leverage opportunities outside his current organization. A major milestone was choosing a strategic initiative, which helped him stand out and demonstrate his leadership potential in front of key stakeholders in the company. We worked on improving his communication and presentation skills, which had a major impact on his authority both inside the company and externally. Last week, he called me, telling me that he was offered a Product Director role in his current company. He was extremely happy because this position had people management responsibilities and was based on the strategic initiative he had been leading. ☕ I had a great coffee this morning with a CPO discussing all things Product and music! One thing that came to mind and I'm always fascinated to hear from Product leaders, is how to keep IC level PM's engaged beyond a 24 month mark. Most Product Managers I speak to in the market (regardless of level) want to work on challenges and solve problems that are exciting, new and unearthed! Claire Vo's Config keynote, "Hard Truths about the Future of Product Management," deeply resonated with me. I know multiple product leaders who went from leading big teams of PMs to being "Super IC PMs." 90% of them are much happier (and fulfilled) in their roles compared to when they were managing people.
