The very nature of our role requires us to navigate through undefined territories, bridging gaps between different departments, and aligning diverse perspectives towards a common goal. Embracing this ambiguity allows us to be adaptable, innovative, and proactive in solving complex problems. It's in these gray areas that we find opportunities to define clear strategies, drive product vision, and ultimately create value. My client called me and said, 'Annett, I think it's time for me to be a #productleader. Is my company the right one for this move?' 🤔 He had been working in senior product management roles for the last five years. His goal was to step up as a Product Leader with people management responsibilities, moving from delivering products to leading a team of product managers. Faced with his company’s ongoing reorganization, he was unsure whether to stay or find leadership opportunities elsewhere. That was the reason he reached out to me to coach him through this decision-making process and transition into product leadership. I proposed a hybrid coaching strategy given the unstable company environment. We developed a goal-oriented career roadmap that focused on advancing his influence within the company, while also working out an effective and manageable networking strategy to leverage opportunities outside his current organization. A major milestone was choosing a strategic initiative, which helped him stand out and demonstrate his leadership potential in front of key stakeholders in the company. We worked on improving his communication and presentation skills, which had a major impact on his authority both inside the company and externally. Last week, he called me, telling me that he was offered a Product Director role in his current company. He was extremely happy because this position had people management responsibilities and was based on the strategic initiative he had been leading. We need to build up and bring more awareness to both the business impact and personal motivation of strong, individual contributor roles. The feedback I’ve been receiving recently from many product managers is they simply don’t understand how they can grow in their role, without being a manager. Many also don’t understand the expectations of their role. With orgs flattening, building less with more, leaders need to provide more clarity on how the expectations and responsibilities of the product role expands over time. For product leaders - this will help motivate your team, build more confidence in their growth within the company and ultimately help your company build better products.
