Spiber Inc. raised over JPY10 billion (around $65M) in equity financing and a total funding of $489 million over 9 rounds.🚀 With this funding, Spiber will accelerate mass production of its next-gen material, Brewed Protein, and facilitate global sales for the fashion, automotive, and personal care industries. Spiber uses precision fermentation and polymer and material science to develop protein-based alternatives to animal and petrochemical materials. These polymers can be used to make a variety of materials, including spider silk, wool, cashmere, leather, and fur. Last year, Spiber’s next-gen materials were released as part of the 2023 Fall/Winter Collections, including The North Face, Goldwin, GOLDWIN INC. , nanamica inc., and Woolrich. The funding, led by ICIG Ventures and Unconventional Ventures, will accelerate the deployment and commercialization of Cellugy's EcoFLEXY fermentation platform and support product co-development partnerships. Cellugy aims to replace petrochemical ingredients in personal care products with its fully bio-based and biodegradable alternatives. Transforming beer into leather? Really? 👀 Arda Biomaterials is on a mission to convert waste barley grains from the beer brewing industry into animal-free, plastic-free leather for use in the fashion, home goods, and automotive industries. The UK-based company's material, New Grain™, utilizes the chemical composition of waste barley grain to create a substance with leather-like properties. Brewers' spent grain is easily accessible and typically sold at a low price as animal feed. Arda Biomaterials is taking a different approach by converting this grain into a sustainable alternative to leather. 💬 "The chemical composition in waste grain is uniquely suited to be transformed into a material that can resemble many of the properties of leather and more” said CTO TJ Edward Mitchell. You've heard by now that microplastics being found in human blood are causing cancer and diabetes. Well, a couple of weeks ago at our monthly Investor Circle, we heard from an award-winning venture team in Asia which is turning agricultural waste into high-value, low-cost, and scalable biomaterials to end microplastics and hunger. The biomaterials are produced using a drop-in technology, are 100% compostable, and can be used for coating application, food packaging, and film.
