The grid of the future will be dominated by power electronics. Understanding their behaviour, the unique oscillatory phenomena that can occur and the tools to analyze them is of key importance to safeguard reliability, as highlighted by the recent FERC order 901. I highly recommend this #cigre webinar on ‘MULTI-FREQUENCY OSCILLATIONS IN POWER-ELECTRONIC-BASED ENERGY SYSTEMS’ which will be worth waking up early for by North American audiences. Breakfast-and-learn :-)
Exciting event is coming! I would like to draw your attention to the upcoming CIGRE webinar (next Monday, Feb 12th) from working group C4.49 – “Multi-frequency oscillations in power electronic based energy systems” driven by myself and Christoph Buchhagen from TenneT. During the webinar we will hear about new forms of instabilities and interactions driven by power electronic converters in modern power systems. The content will be presented by world class experts in this engineering domain from Ørsted, TenneT, Aalborg University, Hitachi Energy, Universitat Politècnica de València, Shell. If of interest, please register using this link: https://lnkd.in/d2y6z6aa where you will also find a short overview of the work involved and what to expect from the webinar. Thank you Christoph, Xiongfei, Mats, Ramon, Yin, Jun Bum for moving it forward.

Interesting publication on IEEE Open Journal of Power Electronics of my KIT colleague Jan Wachter (https://lnkd.in/eNemCATr). This works analyse the last 20 years large-scale incidents, pointing out the main causes that provoked them. It concludes that power electronics-based resources can be less scaring for the power systems stability than we thought, and instead they can increase the resilience and robustness of the grid. Good work Jan! IEEE Power Electronics Society, University of Karlsruhe
Jan Wachter and colleagues at KIT identified 33 of the most significant power grid incidents of the past two decades, and then ran a pair of thought experiments: How might a future grid with a higher penetration of electronically-integrated equipment (think solar farms, batteries, electric cars) respond differently during a similar incident? And, Could such inverter-based resources counteract blackout mechanisms such as cascading failures that have plagued grids for decades? I considered their findings for IEEE Spectrum...

The fourth and final panel of eGrid2023 will discuss on the interesting topic of "The evolution of distribution grid: from Watt to power electronics-based grid" with speakers from Scotland, France and Germany. This is a timely topic, because the energy transformation ("Energiewende" in german) needs to happen mostly at the distribution systems level. Join us at eGrid2023! www.egrid2023.com Ali Kazerooni, Dr. Ilknur Colak, Stephan Rupp IEEE Power Electronics Society, IEEE Power & Energy Society

Morning of Day 1 of the CIGRE Grid of the Future Conference (https://lnkd.in/dmPd6Ymj) Keynote Speaker Chris Root showing the challenges of DER integration in a small grid (compared to other territories), for example the quick variation of solar generation caused by cloudy days and how the utility has to be able to match those variation with available generation. Limits in solar capacity when there is snow on panels. The new challenges that planners face, moving from planning based on summer and winter peaks to now having to plan for summer midday peak, summer evening peak, nighttime minimum and mid-day minimum. An interesting solution been adopted by Green Mountain power by renting storage to end users with the understanding that they can have access to that stored energy three times a month when needed by the system. The distribution innovation substation, feeder and end-use customer panel had an interesting discussion. The need to work with end users to solve the problems faced by the local utility, collaboration among all stakeholders, have a holistic approach to ensure the distribution grid is resilient when the goals set for NetZero are met. Session 1B talked about the need of understanding what is been measured and what output is been produced by machine learning algorithms is very important to fully take advantages of this technologies (no black boxes). The challenges on implementing Digital Twins for power systems was presented by Jeremy Till and the benefits of adding communications for DER was discussed by Dan Ernstmann. I'm pumped about the opportunity to attend the IEEE Power & Energy Society Conference next week! These types of events never fail to energize both my personal and professional development. Gaining insight and perspective from the event and then carrying that momentum into our content always adds value to our message that can be passed throughout the workforce. A few concepts I consider when attending events and conferences: - Making new connections and strengthening existing ones. - Research speakers and session topics ahead of time. Allowing me time to actively listen and be present during the event. - Can I incorporate any information and insight taken from the event and make it a part of the podcast? - Are any exhibitors highlighting solutions or technology that is relevant to the workforce and/or our audience? - Be up to date on current topics and sports to engage in small talk. - Gather enough information to recap the event to the team and summarize the experience in a post. What did I leave out? Also, looking forward to meeting some new people within the industry. Be sure to let me know if you will be attending. #conference #power #culture #podcast #energy #discussions

Power devices based on wide-bandgap semiconductors such as SiC and GaN have many advantages over conventional Si-based devices, especially for renewable energy and smart grid applications. In this work, I used SiC MOSFETs and SiC Schottky diodes to improve the performance of photovoltaic (PV) energy systems. I designed and implemented a novel converter topology that can achieve high efficiency, high power density, and low harmonic distortion. I also developed a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm that can optimize the output power of the PV panels under varying irradiance and temperature conditions. I presented our results at the International Conference on Electrical, Control and Computer Systems (ICECCS) and published a paper in IEEE Xplore. My work demonstrates the potential of SiC-based power electronics for enhancing the reliability and sustainability of renewable energy sources. the link of publication: https://lnkd.in/e6y6Yj4Q
