Striking a balance between modernity and tradition is a constant challenge for many communities, particularly those nestled in the majestic mountains of Gilgit Baltistan. The Hunza Valley, renowned for its harmonious way of life, exemplifies this. While modernity offers undeniable progress, it can also lead to a materialistic outlook that disrupts the sacred balance that defines these regions. For our last check-in from our stay in Astypalea, we are bringing you a voice from the community! 🌿 Talking with us was Lambrini Grigori, a born and raised Astypalean and the Dean of Astypalea's Gymnasium. Like many islanders, she has spent the majority of her life in the community, with the exception of her university studies. Lamrini shared that, as with most novelties, people were skeptical at first about projects related to sustainability and e-mobility. However, external stakeholders and the local government ensured that the people were well informed about what was going on. 🤔 Reflecting on the introduction of e-mobility to Astypalea, she said: "This was a chance to show that although we are a small island and far apart from central Greece, we can become a role model. They explained to the people what this project is about, which helped us understand what it could bring to the island. Of course, we are a very small place, so we need to be very aware of the progress made because we want to maintain our traditional character, our picturesque island—we don't want this to change." 🔹️We believe that energy transition must be an inclusive process, not only a just one. This also means addressing concerns and working towards a shared vision - and that is why communities deserve a spotlight of their own. Happy 3rd Birthday to El Castillo 🥳 rrreefs built El Castillo in 2021 using 228 specially designed bricks off the coast of #SanAndresIsland, Colombia 🧱🏝️ We assembled our prototype in just 10 days, together with 11 workshop participants, the local NGO Corales de Paz - Buceo con Propósito and other stakeholders. In 2022, just six months after building, we conducted our first monitoring of the reef which showed promising signs that our structure was working, and marine life was making it their home. 2023 was a year of ups and downs for the reef. We followed the growth of the baby corals, and coral fragments. Witnessed great ecological cues, until November 2023. Like many other places in the world, Colombia was struck by the heat wave that caused many corals living there to die. This was devastating news. However, this was not the end for all the corals of El Castillo. After what happened in November 2023, we were curious to see how things would develop in San Andrés. And rest assured, we were not disappointed! In March of this year, we conducted some more monitoring dives and discovered an abundance of baby corals living inside El Castillo. Fish were still living there, and nature had taken over again.
