To continue with Cervical Screening Awareness Week, it's important to know what cervical screening is, what it's for, and who it's for! Every person with a cervix should get screened. People ages 21-29 should get a Pap smear test every 3 years. People ages 30-65 should get a Pap smear test every 3 year and an hrHPV test every 5 years. Cervical screening is important because health providers are able to find changes in cervical cells early to prevent cervical cancer and maintain gynecological health. We realise that going for a cervical screening (a smear test) isn't the most fun you've ever had.. but if you have a cervix, it's so important that you look after it. Everyone's experience of a screening is different but if you are nervous then here are some tips you could try: - Ask to book a longer appointment : this gives you longer to ask questions and relax. - Bring someone you trust with you - your partner, a parent or a friend. - Ask for a smaller speculum, which might be more comfortable for you. - Wear a skirt or dress - this will help you to feel more covered. - Talk to your nurse - tell them if you are nervous. 💩Do you know your colon cancer risk? ⬆️Mines high. I just scheduled my 2nd colonoscopy a day before my 38th birthday. 🤨What’s high risk? 💩Family history of colon cancer? 💩Ulcerative colitis? Crohns? 💩Previous abdominal radiation? ✅ High Risk. You’ll get a colonoscopy. 🍑 Butt, (I’ll intend the pun here, I suppose) some people can avoid the hose altogether. ✅ People with average risk (everyone that isn’t high risk) should start screenings around age 45. 💩You might have the option of just giving a little stool sample. No invasive procedure, just a little poop in a bag. 🍑 Of course it’s not the most fun screening ever, but colon cancer kills. No butts about it. 💔 My paternal aunt died at 40 from colon cancer.
