What if I could borrow your attention? Just for a minute….40, 50, 60 seconds… In the time that it takes you to read this, someone will have had the courage to pick up the phone and make a call that could save their lives. According to Women’s Aid in the year ending December 2023, the police recorded a domestic abuse offence approximately every 40 seconds (ONS, 2024). One in four women have experienced domestic abuse since the age of 16 and for men it is one in 7. For partner only abuse figures are 22.7% for women and 10.2% for men. If I look at my own caseload over the last year alone, I know that these figures are significantly underestimated and are rising. One of the biggest impacts, not withstanding the significant damage to self-esteem, self-worth and self-identity that domestic abuse leaves in its wake, is the insidious sense of shame that prevails. In language it appears in the myriad ways that communicate “It’s somehow my fault.” In non-verbal communication it can show up in our face, in our eyes, our posture, and the way we hold ourselves in the world. And shame makes us hide. Brené Brown writes “If you put shame in a petri dish, it needs 3 things to grow exponentially: secrecy, silence and judgement. You can view her Ted Talk Brené Brown: The power of vulnerability | TED Talk . Is it any wonder that domestic violence thrives in these conditions. And the antidote to shame? Brene recommends empathy - one of the basic core skills we are taught as therapists in almost every model we operate from. My counselling tutor used to describe it as “one foot in the client’s world and one foot in your own.” Years later and countless hours under my belt I think the antidote is more than empathy. I think a part of what we do as therapists is to help to feel seen safely. Shame holds power over us, so when we ask questions such as “what did you draw upon to stay safe?” or “what told you that you were ready to leave” what we are doing is helping people to see with their own innate capacities, strengths, abilities, and qualities – to make the impossible possible. What emerges in response are phrases such as “I couldn’t take it any longer. I wanted to be a role model for my children. To show them I could stand up for myself and that it wasn’t okay to be treated this way.” That’s what we hold onto in the therapy room, words that enable rather than disable. Often, I don’t have to look too hard to find these descriptions because they are just below the surface, waiting to be revealed. A question away. And in the answers we find changed definitions of the self that begin to emerge. And these definitions are different to the ones that others have tried to place on us in an attempt to coerce and control. I wish we didn’t needed organisations like Family Based Solutions , but I am so glad that Ayse Adil and her team are here.

When your child is diagnosed with dyslexia, it provides valuable information about their strengths and challenges, allowing you to seek the right support. Here are steps to take: Ask questions: Reach out to teachers, healthcare providers, and other parents to understand what dyslexia means for your child. Talk with your child: Discuss dyslexia openly at home, reassuring your child that it's not something to be ashamed of and doesn't reflect their intelligence. Know what comes next at school: If evaluated by the school, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) will be developed for support. One of the key strengths of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is its versatility. The model taught in this two-day training can be used in suicide conversations with adults as well as children and young people, neurotypical and neurodiverse individuals, and people from diverse cultural backgrounds. ASIST works because it embraces the core value that the group has collective wisdom. Participants come to the training room with extensive personal and professional experience, knowledge and skill. Fostering this wisdom creates a meaningful, collaborative and safe learning environment which enhances the existing skills and expertise of the participants while promoting best practice and building confidence through active participation and practice. This month, I had the pleasure of delivering an ASIST with my fantastic co-trainer Rose Rowkins to the dedicated and skillful staff at Aspens Charities who support autistic young people and their families. An exciting new not for profit organisation called Seen & Heard has been established to help support the emotional wellbeing of any adults who have attended boarding or independent day schools. Here is their mission statement: Our mission is to help people on their journey, particularly in seeking resolution and healing from the effects of adverse childhood experiences, including abandonment, neglect, emotional repression, bullying or life-changing abuse. We are a committed group of ex-boarding school pupils who understand these unique institutional experiences, and we believe in the power of connection, and its ability to heal. Adverse experiences in childhood can impact individuals, families and wider-society, often for generations. As a group, we are not always understood by emotional support services, or by our families and wider-society. There is a lack of awareness and acceptance about our early-years experiences, and often prejudice around our perceived ‘privilege’. Good help is out there, but it’s too hard to find and access. We are going to change that! We will also lobby and educate institutions (schools, alumni, universities, media & governing bodies) to take the pastoral care and emotional wellbeing of their people seriously, so they can provide best-in-class emotional support to past and present pupils. Wishing all our schools, their students, families and staff, a restful summer break. We have now engaged with 25 schools, in five different local authorities, in every key stage. We have been commissioned directly by local authorities, SEND departments, charities and parent/carers of young people. We always place the young person at the centre of all we do and make sure their voice is fully represented. We have provided extensive staff training and surgeries. Of course we continue to create our detailed observation reports. These consist of thorough observation notes, voices of every stakeholder, our RISE resilience assessment, an informed conclusion - drilling down into likely root causes of behavioural presentations and pages of personalised, practical strategies to best support the learner. We always get these back in FIVE working days. In a school we engaged with recently, 94% of our recommendations had a positive, measurable effect. We recommend reading this report by Education Policy Institute, in which it talks about the rise in the number of suspensions in secondary schools and makes some very useful suggestions on what schools should do to reduce suspensions and #exclusions. Data from the report shows that young people with social, emotional or mental health needs were more likely to be suspended. It's vital that schools support pupils with these needs, this is where an inclusive, whole-school #nurturing approach can help. This links to the work that we are doing as part of the Inclusive and Nurturing Schools Programme, as it helps to keep children and young people safe and supported in school, and to tackle exclusions by implementing the nurturing approach, to ensure that pupils are ready and able to learn. 📚💜
