Transforming Care: RDT Architects’ Vision Realised at Lea Grange Care Home Challenge RDT Architects set out to transform a former retail and commercial site near the River Lea into a luxurious, purpose-built care home, working with developer, Jarvis Homes, and operator, Porthaven Care Homes. This ambitious project aimed to support a high standard of care, ensuring both comfort and style, while seamlessly integrating comprehensive care services into a welcoming, community-focused environment that would feel like home for residents requiring residential, nursing, dementia, and respite care. Approach: From the initial concept, RDT Architects were deeply involved, developing designs that emphasised space, accessibility, and quality of life. We secured planning approval by presenting an architectural vision that married functionality with elegance. Every detail, from the private, en-suite bedrooms to vibrant communal areas, was crafted to foster comfort and social engagement. Following the sale of the site to Porthaven Care Homes, Condy Lofthouse Architects developed the design in the construction phase with Kori Construction as the main contractor. Result: The completed Lea Grange Care Home stands as a testament to our commitment to exceptional healthcare design. Residents enjoy spacious, private rooms with en-suite wetrooms, alongside top-tier amenities, including a gym, cinema, café, and salon. Communal spaces like the activities and wellbeing room and a private dining room further enhance the experience, creating a sense of community and support. The seamless integration of thoughtful design details has turned Lea Grange into a true home where care and quality of life meet. RDT Architects is proud to see this vision realised and looks forward to continuing our collaboration with Jarvis Homes and the main contractor, Kori Construction Limited, on future care projects, including an upcoming facility for Hertfordshire County Council in South Oxhey. Thank you to the Lea Grange team and Porthaven Care Homes for the inspiring visit. #Architecture #CareHomeDesign #HealthcareArchitecture #Harpenden #RIBA #CareHome

🎨 Why #Healthcare Architects Are Adding Colour to Hospital Projects 🏥 In recent years, the role of colour in healthcare environments has shifted from a purely aesthetic choice to a vital component of patient care and well-being. Architects are increasingly incorporating vibrant, thoughtful colour palettes into hospital designs to create more welcoming, healing spaces for patients, families, and staff. Image attached is a #terrazzo stiarcase project at The Hospital for Sick Children designed by B+H Architects and manufactured by our partners at Wausau Tile. Here's why: Mood Enhancement & Healing: Studies show that colour can significantly impact mood, stress levels, and overall well-being. Warm, calming hues like blues and greens can reduce anxiety and promote relaxation, while energizing colours such as yellows and oranges can encourage positivity. Wayfinding: Hospitals can be overwhelming to navigate. By using colour strategically, architects help improve wayfinding, guiding patients and visitors more easily through complex spaces while reducing confusion and stress. Humanizing the Space: Hospitals are often seen as sterile environments, but introducing color can help make the spaces feel more personal and comforting. A welcoming environment can foster a sense of comfort, dignity, and care. Brand Identity: Colour also allows hospitals to reflect their unique mission and values, strengthening their brand identity and connecting with patients on a deeper level. At Inspired by Architecture partnering with Wausau Tile, we’re proud to support this evolving trend with our extensive range of customizable #terrazzotile and #precastterrazzo, offering architects the flexibility to design with colour and functionality in mind. As healthcare design continues to prioritize patient-centered environments, colour will remain a powerful tool for improving both the experience and outcomes of those who walk through these doors. 🌿✨ Brianne Delorme John Etcher Stephanie Nowe-Morris Jeff Churchill Krysta Aten-Schell AIA, LEED AP BD/C, WELL AP Taline Garboushian Ilinca Popa Justin Harris Marija Mojsilovic Govedarica, Architect, NSAA, MRAIC Pj Glasco, AIA, ACHA, EDAC Safoura Khajeh, OAA, EDAC, LEED® GA Haritha Bothireddy Ailan McKenzie Marjan Soheilinia Stephen J. The Sanctuary of Personal Space In the hustle and bustle of modern life, the concept of personal space becomes increasingly crucial. Our homes, designed to be sanctuaries from the external world, play a pivotal role in shaping our mental and emotional well-being. The psychology of personal space explores how the design of our living spaces influences our sense of security, privacy, and comfort. Consider the layout of a bedroom; the placement of furniture, the choice of colors, and the level of clutter can all impact the quality of sleep and relaxation. The design of private spaces within communal environments, such as offices or shared residences, must strike a delicate balance between fostering collaboration and providing individuals with the autonomy to personalize their personal spaces. Recognizing and respecting the psychology of personal space allows architects to create environments that cater to the diverse needs of individuals and promote a sense of well-being. Conclusion: In the mix of how our minds work and the buildings around us, the places we live play a big part in how we think and feel. Everything, from where we put our furniture to the colors we choose, affects how we feel. Architects and designers are really important in making places that help us feel good, connect with others, and live well with our surroundings. Exploring how humans and their spaces work together shows that architects have the power to create environments that make us happy and live in harmony with the world around us. Thinking about the psychology of space helps us not only think about the places we design but also understand how those places shape who we are. https://lnkd.in/dJZ9ivM7

What is the medical potential of an underutilized retail mall? In this MCD Magazine article, Certificant and Principal at Perkins&Will, Ian Sinnett, discusses how existing malls often have the ideal infrastructure for medical facilities. With spacious interiors, substantial parking, and proximity to residential areas, underutilized retail malls can be transformed into “medical malls” and thereby offer convenient access to medical care for underserved communities. Click the link below to read Ian’s full article and explore his suggested design considerations for bringing this idea to life. 👇 https://lnkd.in/gYp4HqQW #ACHA #HealthcareArchitecture #HealthcareArchitect #HealthcareDesign #HealthcareDesigner #Healthcare #HealthcareInnovation #HealthcareIndustry #Architecture #Architect #HealthcareProfessionals #Design

Some interesting insights into the direction of travel for occupier wants and needs.
#ICYMI, just before Easter we interviewed four of our HBD property agent partners, getting their insights into what people really want from their homes and workspaces. The resulting articles were insightful long-reads, exploring the trends across all property genres - residential, industrial and logistics and office space - but there was a lot of commonality with wellbeing, great spaces and sustainability top of most occupiers' lists. The appetite for more chromaticity in the city appears to be on the rise. What’s driving it in this current climate? Is it a need for differentiation, a sense of identity and belonging within the historic and cultural urban context to attract long term prestigious tenants? This morning, I was lucky enough to take a study tour of Worship Square with the NLA and hear about the journey from concept through consultation and engagement with neighbours and Hackney Council Design & Planning to WELL Platinum, BREEAM Outstanding and NABERS 5-star rating from Ryan Jakes at HB Reavis and Chris Jones at Make Architects. Unsurprisingly, I especially appreciated insights into the colour process for this project from Make - from initial area mapping to the façade’s colour rationale, refinement, positioning and materiality. Skipping off to my next appointment, you can see other creative uses of exterior colour on the way through to Liverpool Street Station in 1 Crowne Place designed by KPF, 1 Broadgate designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and Broadgate 3 designed by Orms - I love the richness that these interventions are adding to this place. But, what if we could go further in connecting these places with the needs of communities, local government and business? What if we explored the properties of colour more fully to further support inclusivity and wellbeing while contributing to the drive for regenerative practices in urban design? It could be really interesting. Thank you again for your time today Chris Jones, Ryan Jakes and the team at NLA. #colourbeyondaesethtics #colourdesign #colourspecialist #architecture #urbandesign #wellbeing #inclusiveplaces #sustainablecities Sound track: Colours Beyond Colours, DJ Food
