Beyond its exterior architecture, the SickKids Patient Support Centre's (PSC) interior design is equally impressive. Our interior design team incorporated vibrant elements that reflect the patients' experiences. From uplifting cursive LED messages in the elevator lobbies to whimsical murals and a playful mobile installation, the PSC is a truly unique and welcoming space. We're excited to be part of this year's Chairs for Charity, a philanthropic project combining design and education. Ten design firms have created custom Eames chairs to be auctioned for ARIDO BID student scholarships. Our B+H interior design team was thrilled to contribute a chair that celebrates nature. Titled "Nature's Nook," our design merges the essence of the outdoors with functional design. Inspired by the spirit of rewilding, the chair is designed to thrive in indoor and outdoor gardens, inviting the organic world to reclaim space and flourish around us. Its earthy texture and organic form serve as a tranquil reminder of our connection to the natural world and the importance of preserving it. To support design education, bid on your favourite chair in the auction: https://lnkd.in/egsnusy6 A big shoutout to the B+H interior design team for their amazing work on this chair: Erin Fleming, Emily Manasc, Catherine Cho, Kristelle Mesina, Maia Azevedo, Stephanie Panyan #ChairsforCharity #ARIDO #Nature

The SickKids Patient Support Centre (PSC) is the first step of the SickKids campus renewal, known as Project Horizon, a multi-year campus transformation project. The plan aims to build an inspired and re-imagined hospital of the future through a thoughtful balance between new build and renewal initiatives. Recently honoured with the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) Award of Excellence, the PSC showcases a unique approach to building design: Designed from the outside in and inside out. Reflecting SickKids' commitment to research and integrated healthcare, the PSC is a transformative force with the mission to nurture #collaboration and #innovation. Serving as a dynamic hub within the campus, the in-patient Atrium Building connects with the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning, emphasizing critical links between the bench and bedside. The PSC houses administrative services, educational areas, and workspaces for over 3,000 staff members from 30+ hospital departments. The PSC's interior design is equally impressive. Our interior design team incorporated vibrant elements that reflect the patients' experiences. From uplifting cursive LED messages in the elevator lobbies to whimsical murals and a playful mobile installation, the PSC is a truly unique and welcoming space. The lower levels of the PSC offer a versatile learning environment. A versatile Simulation Center provides adaptable spaces for various educational needs. Additionally, a Student Center, Resource Library, and conference rooms facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration. The upper floors of the workspace prioritize employee well-being with a focus on flexibility and collaboration. Adaptable areas for individual and group work and informal gathering spaces encourage interaction and innovation. Together with SickKids, we’re proud to have supported the development of this transformative space. We hope to see it as an enabling, innovative, interactive, and collaborative space for generations to come. Recently, I was honoured to present the SickKids Patient Support Centre, an Award of Excellence winner for Best Tall Building in the Americas, at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) #NewOrRenew Conference. Our presentation, in collaboration with Kyle Robinson from SickKids, spoke to how we designed this innovative building from the inside out and outside in, paying close attention to materiality and ingraining flexibility into the culture of the evolving workplace. The 22-storey Patient Support Centre (PSC) at SickKids campus in downtown Toronto showcases a multi-disciplinary approach, seamlessly blending architecture, workplace interiors, and landscape design. The tower stands out with its distinctive, undulating façade and a central blue-ribbon staircase that invites natural light deep into the building. The transparent design fosters a sense of openness and connection, reflecting the collaborative spirit that defines the centre. The PSC prioritizes energy efficiency and environmental impact. It was designed to achieve #LEEDGold certification and adhere to Toronto's Tier 2 Green Building Standards. Solar studies informed the façade's design, incorporating coloured vertical fins for shading and optimal thermal performance. Building automation systems further enhance energy efficiency by adjusting heating, cooling, and lighting based on occupancy. Inside, the PSC consolidates the hospital’s core administrative services into a central hub, houses interdisciplinary educational and learning areas, and individual and collaborative workspaces for staff from over 30 departments. Approximately 3,000 staff members occupy the building, including physicians, nurses, and more. By adopting a multidisciplinary approach, architectural design was integrated with interior planning to create a flexible environment that aligns with the varied programmatic needs. The SickKids PSC is a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of creating spaces that are not only functional but also uplifting and inspiring. At B+H Architects, we're proud to have supported this transformative project for The Hospital for Sick Children. SickKids PSC Photography by A-Frame Studio and Tom Arban Photography.

On #WorldArchitectureDay, we're celebrating the innovative minds behind The HiveWay, a sustainable, beehive-inspired concept for a community beneath #Toronto's Gardiner Expressway. This design recently earned second place in the prestigious international Architecture Competitions // Buildner "Under Bridge" Design Competition. Inspired by the efficiency of a beehive, the concept incorporates modular, hexagon-shaped housing units directly into the existing infrastructure. This biomimetic solution offers a creative and sustainable approach to addressing Toronto's housing challenges while enhancing urban living. We're particularly proud to recognize the core B+H design team who worked tirelessly outside of their regular project obligations to bring this award-winning concept to life. Their passion, creativity, and commitment to sustainable design have made The HiveWay a truly remarkable project. This achievement is also a testament to the collaborative efforts among our team of urban planners, architects, engineers, sustainability experts, and interior designers from SJ Group member companies (Atelier Ten, B+H Architects, CHIL Interior Design, Robert Bird Group, and SAA Architects Pte Ltd). Hear from the B+H design team as they share their experience designing for this competition!
