The question I keep getting asked is “how do I stand out with a captain when looking for a job with so many other people walking the docks and joining the industry?”, and so I wanted to address some of the little known things that could put you on the top of a captain’s list. 1. Side Skills. Can you cook a decent meal if the Chef is sleeping? Mix a mean margarita that guests will love? Do you know how to salsa or sing opera? Make sure you recognize and promote your unique skills. 2. Sense of Humor: If you can make me laugh while scrubbing the deck, you’re already halfway there, and bonus points if you laugh at my bad jokes too! 3. Positive Vibes: Bring some optimism and a great team spirit. Good energy attracts good energy! 4. Love for the Sea: Must genuinely enjoy salty air, sunsets, and occasionally (often) being splashed by waves.

How many dwarves does Cinderella have? Some might say, "It’s seven," assuming you referred to Snow White, naming the wrong Disney princess. Others might say, "None," and then lecture you, “But if you mean Snow White…” The thing is, based on our shared imagination and global culture, we might assume one or the other answer is right. However, we can’t truly know whether the person asking the question meant Cinderella or Snow White, so we don’t know which perspective is correct. We can only find the right answers if we ask and understand the right questions. If you want to be a great listener and guide, I recommend asking more than answering - where the best response to this question would be: “Do you really mean Cinderella, or were you thinking of Snow White?”

A new post on a story that never gets old… 🎻 **When Talent Goes Unnoticed: The Joshua Bell Story** 🎻 Did you know that world-renowned violinist Joshua Bell once performed incognito in a New York City subway station, and hardly anyone noticed him? Just days earlier, he had played to a sold-out theater where patrons paid hundreds of dollars to hear him. This striking contrast highlights a crucial lesson: Environment Matters. Many of us, like Joshua Bell in the subway, find ourselves in places where our talents, hard work, and dedication go unrecognized. We give our all, yet the appreciation and rewards don't seem to follow. The key takeaway? Know your worth and go where you are valued. When you arm yourself with value and confidence, and remove yourself from an environment that isn't serving you, you begin to thrive and grow. Surround yourself with those who recognize and appreciate your contributions. It’s in these environments that you can truly shine. Don't settle for less. Go where you are appreciated, valued, and can make the impact you are destined to achieve. #KnowYourWorth #ValueYourself #GoWhereYouAreAppreciated #JoshuaBell #Motivation #Inspiration

Investing in staff development is so important. Here's a few insights from our CO from a learning programme she is undertaking through CO3 Chief Officers 3rd Sector.
I am blessed to work for a progressive organisation, The Northern Ireland Boys' Brigade (BBNI), that recognises the importance of investing in staff training and development. I am fortunate to be a member of CO3 Chief Officers 3rd Sector, an organisation that understands the challenges of the sector and works hard to secure funding and provide tailored, relevant and accessible learning opportunities. I am currently completing 2 courses through CO3 and, in an attempt to properly reflect and apply the learning, I am writing a series of reflections on some of the gems of knowledge that have been so willingly shared by both the course tutors and my learning colleagues. I was once told that ‘sharing is caring’ so in that spirit, I am sharing the reflections here. I hope they strike a chord with someone reading them. Feedback and comments welcome! What’s keeping you behind the podium? The impact of a video shared on day 2 of the CO3 Chief Officers 3rd Sector Leading for the Future programme at Ulster University seemed to be far reaching among the learning group. It appears to now be on a repeat loop in my mind! Behind the scenes in the making of The Greatest Showman, a video was recorded of Keala Settle singing ‘This is me’ for the first time and captures her journey of stepping out from behind the podium. Such a powerful watch on so many levels. The development of inner confidence to step out, the impact it has on others, the impact it has on self when that step is taken….and the power of the end product. As I reflect, the questions I am asking myself: 💡 ‘This is me’ – who is that and do I bring my authentic self to every part of my life? 💡 Who can I encourage to step out from behind the podium and how can I support them to do that? 💡 What projects/ tasks/ decisions would benefit from me stepping out in front of the podium and what is keeping me behind the podium? 💡 What could be achieved if the podium is no longer blocking key decisions? Stepping out from behind the podium is a positive enabler to achieving great things, both for yourself, your team and your organisation. I encourage you to watch the video and see what effect it has on you. https://lnkd.in/eqHR_JeV

When your security officers don’t consider customer service to be one of their roles, you’re risking your organisation’s reputation. When they do, is it saving your organisation money on PR & Marketing….? Toro Solutions have assisted a number of large organisations in assisting to upskill their security teams, or audit contracted security providers. Speak to Liv or Mike.
Credit where credit is due! Last night my wife and I went to see “You me at Six” in concert at Portsmouth Guildhall, Portsmouth Guildhall Renaissance Founder's Club. The reason for my post is that the in house Security team were the epitome of how professional frontline officers should be. After the support act, I was asked by a very friendly officer if I would mind moving up a few seats so that a less abled lady could sit on the end seat where there was no arm rest which helped her mobility and comfort. The Officer’s request was made through empathy and a genuine desire for her to enjoy the show. How could I say no! He then lent over and offered to buy me a pint of beer as a Thankyou. Unnecessary, said I, I’m driving. Off he goes only to return with a bag of Maltesers and wine gums instead. That was a very kind gesture and won me over as well as all those around me…. Who benefitted from those sweets. Throughout the night I watched the supervisors coordinate security staff from the balconies and the stage officers carefully lift crowd surfers out of the mosh pit! All delivered with a sense of fun but ultimately safety. I was very impressed! It encourages me to allow my own teenage boys to attend concerts at the Guildhall because I know there are no bullies in the security team and that their safety will be assured. Thanks to all involved!
