Celebrating 2 years of making the marketing magic happen at Aha Media Group 💖 People often ask me how I went from owning a coffee shop and bakery to healthcare marketing. A lot of the things I do in life are strategic. But most of them (often the best of them) just sort of naturally evolve from the people I meet and interests I pursue. Story time! I started growing my coffee business the year Facebook first allowed non-college students to join. There were no business accounts back then. I built a social media strategy around The SweetSpot having a personal profile. First name: The SweetSpot Last name: Coffee Shop Relationship status: It’s complicated I became obsessed with social media marketing. Growing followers 100x and revenue 10x over 10 years. When I graphed it out, the correlation was uncanny. A few years into that, I started teaching other small business owners how to use social media to build their brands. I wanted to know everything I could about social and local SEO so I could share it with others. So I gobbled up every resource I could. In 2016 I took a class on content marketing from Andy Crestodina and it opened my eyes to a world beyond local SEO and social. I have a tendency to go all in on something I’m interested in so … hello, new obsession! Content marketing! ✨ When I sold my business 4 years later, I knew I wanted to focus solely on marketing. After a couple of years working as a consultant across almost every industry you can imagine (no, seriously, I did everything from Pinterest marketing for Gulf Shores Tourism to web copy for industrial saw blade sharpeners), I wanted to find a role where I could learn more and focus on growing a brand. I reached back out to Andy, who is as generous with his time as he is with his expertise. He put me in touch with his marketing director, Amanda Gant, who met with me and said … “I know just the role for you”. A few days later I was interviewing with Ahava Leibtag and felt immediately and inexplicably “at home”. That feeling of just clicking into place. The next month, I had a new job. And my new obsessions are patient experience, health literacy, and AI in healthcare. … There’s a lot more to that story. Like how I was sitting by the pool in a campground in Palm Springs, CA when I met with Andy… Or how I did my Aha Media onboarding from the back of my RV as we drove through Oklahoma… But today I am focusing the power of: 1. Pursuing interests obsessively 2. Reaching out and building connections Both take a growth mindset and a little bit of bravery. And I would not be here today without them. … P.S. It’s a partnership that definitely takes two to tango. Empaths like us understand, but still some senior journalists should be empathetic to PRs. I recently heard a young journalist at a newswire is turning into a snob, ticking her fingers to have PR’s help her with a plate of food. These same pricks turn super sweet to CEOs and companies for perks like junkets and gifts. They are compromised journalists in my book of definitions. That’s not what consultants are for. They are a bridge between journalists and CEOs. They deserve that much respect. You have work, and so do they. Pick yourself up and get that plate of food! I blame the editors and seniors in her team for rearing a snoot. CEOs don’t have time, journalists don’t have patience. PRs are the AIs you need for beautiful coverage. I’ve been a PR, brand manager and journalist. So I know what it takes to be on each side of the table. And hands down, a PR works more than a journalist. I have no shame in saying that. PRs are excellent reminders, Excel ninjas, PPT maestros and even therapists! I don’t care if these so called certificators of journalism don’t accept me as part of their clan. There was a lack in coverage that they hired me. Shouting out to all my PR friends - keep the bandwagon going, and let nobody dim your light. You are awesome! Some of you are better reporters and without the byline. I know so many pricks in the industry who get articles written by PRs and publish it as theirs. I so wish to name and shame them. They now anchor shows for a nascent business channel of a big news corporation in India. A comms shared the painful ordeal of this deceit. These folks are sleazes who make “overnight reporters”. Disgrace to the industry. And journalists, I know deep down all of you want to be a comms person for the pay, and think that you can have some chill. So please be kind, because one day you will be on other side of the table and a snooty PR will do to you what you once did to an innocent PR. Some PRs are ex-journalists, and they know the shift because of haughty reporters. Don’t be entitled. You can quickly fall off your cloud castle. #PRDay

In the immortal words of Bon Jovi - “Woah, we’re halfway there…” Halfway through my secondment with Poppyscotland and what a four months it has been. Over those months, there have been many, many, many day… I’ve distilled them into one of the five different types. 1️⃣ a school day: with new areas of IG to learn about (enjoying raffles and regular giving), and reshaping my love of legacies. New techniques for DM, and different ways of working. 2️⃣ a planning day: planning my time to ensure that I can fit it all that is important, and moving aside the bits which I have absolutely ability to change or impact. 3️⃣ a reflection day: talking with those in my network about what I’ve learned, what’s gone well, what hasn’t, and what would I do differently next time… 4️⃣ a prioritising day: understanding that my priorities, really aren’t everyone else’s priorities, and that their priorities really aren’t mine too. With a little caring and sharing still gets the job done! 5️⃣ a “not today Satan” day. Enough said. I’m looking forward to a few more types of days, as I move into months 5, 6, 7 and 8 - there’s a another song on there somewhere….

Instead, we get to start our day calmly at home, which helps us focus better and get more done. With nearly 8 years of experience here, I've seen firsthand how remote work lets us mix our personal and work lives smoothly, so we can do well in both areas. It's proof of the trust and support we share in our Robin team. 💙 What does freedom at work mean to you?

It’s okay to be proud of our achievements. It’s so damn hard to celebrate personal achievements without finding some fault in it. For others, we give compliments without even weathering a critique on how they did it. I am guilty of this and I am being particularly careful about the criticism I give myself or how I talk about my accomplishments, especially in front of my daughter. What have I achieved and not given myself the least bit the credit for until much later in life? I’ll name three: 1. I speak, read, and write 6 language, all before the age of 20. 2. I wrote my master’s thesis over a period of 4 years with a demanding full-time job, family obligations, and way too little sleep, and not once did I think it was time to give it up. 3. I solo-traveled and lived in various places around the world without hesitation and fear. Share your 3 achievements in the comments and let go of that obnoxious critic within too. Love every bit of this!!! <3 It's okay to accept praise for the ways we've helped others. All too often we (women in particular) dismiss any recognition by saying, "Thank you, but ____," or "It was nothing," or "That's just my job." Embrace ALL your talents! YOU made that happen. YOU listened to someone else's ideas. YOU supported a friend during a hard time. YOU made that goal into a reality. YOU brighten someone's day simply by smiling and saying hello. When you accept praise from others, you are also accepting yourself. God gave you the amazing talent to love and support those around you. Acts of service, gift-giving, etc. are all different outlets for HIS glory to be seen through you. Don't dim your light! You never know who needs to see it. Light begets more light. Let's light up the world together!
