"Practice what you preach." Our internal team has had a great two days of Crucial Conversations training led by none other than our own HR Strategist, Lisa Borre, MBA, SHRM-SCP. A question we are often asked is "How do you create culture?". Well, one way to do that from the top down is to prioritize the ongoing education of yourself and your team. In this instance, the KRT team spent two days learning how to better manage conflict and hold difficult conversations in ways that create positive outcomes personally and professionally. Thanks to Crucial Learning and Starbucks for the content and coffee. ;)

Are your company values just words on paper? Here’s how you can integrate them into the work culture: 1. Clearly define your company values. Communicate them to your team so everyone understands what you stand for. 2. Model the behaviours and attitudes that align with your company values, and lead by example. 3. When recruiting, consider the cultural fit. This is just as important as technical ability in building a cohesive team. 4. Whether it's in meetings, newsletters, or company-wide emails, consistently reinforce how your values shape your organisation’s identity and decisions. 5. Recognise, celebrate and reward employees for their commitment to upholding the organisation’s principles. 6. Train your leaders to uphold and promote the company values in their daily interactions and decision-making. Does your company do a good job of living by its values? I'd love to hear from you below 👇

Why appreciation for employees is so important? Appreciation comes before value creation! In order to find the right workers for the future and keep them in the company, managers must increasingly return to the human element and integrate recognition into the corporate culture. This begins with the appreciation of each individual employee being placed in the foreground and the achievements and contributions to the overall success of the company being seen. Appreciating employees creates a work culture in which every person feels valued, respected and driven. It includes recognition, praise, respect for individual performance and promotes open communication and a balance between work and private life. You can show your counterpart appreciation through *Strengthening and appreciative words - “Words of Affirmation” *Undivided attention for others - “Quality Time” *Services / willingness to help – “Acts of Service” * Gestures that come from the heart and touch – “Tangible Gifts” … By the way, appreciation is a two-way street! Managers are also happy when they are recognized and valued by their employees.

How do you improve company culture? Company culture is not just the words you put on your website in the “about us” section; it’s a scope of behaviors and attitudes the whole workforce, starting from the senior leadership to working students, exhibit in the workplace. Therefore, it can’t be changed by just printing out stickers with company values. But here are some ideas on how to actually affect it: 🧑🏻💼 Ensure better organizational alignment. When employees’ individual values are aligned with the values and objectives of a company, the performance skyrockets. 👩🏻🎤 Go beyond DEI and work on belonging. 94% of employees report that a sense of belonging in the workplace is somewhat to very important. Working with the senior leadership on establishing a space where employees’ voice matters will reap its benefits in an improved company culture. 💪🏻 Recognize hard work and achievements. Recognition plays a huge role in how your employees perceive the company. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need big monetary rewards to show your appreciation. Simply recognizing your teammates and/or subordinates in all-hands meetings or on your company’s social intranet can go a long way. 👸🏾 Coach your leaders to adopt the right leadership styles. Unsurprisingly, leadership style (whether of the senior leadership team or the middle managers) plays a huge role in company culture. 83% of employees at the 100 Best Companies say management’s actions match its words, versus 42% of employees at the average workplace. When employees see a high level of accountability in their leaders, they’re more likely to adopt the same behavior, which will naturally lead to improved company culture.

Here are strategies to reward their success: 1. Personalized Recognition: Tailor acknowledgments to individual achievements, such as completing courses or implementing innovative teaching methods. Specific recognition inspires both the individual and others to excel. 2. Public Appreciation Events: Organize regular events, like staff meetings, to publicly acknowledge outstanding contributions. This boosts morale, fosters unity, and highlights milestones achieved by the team. 3. Professional Growth Investment: Demonstrate commitment to staff development by offering opportunities for advanced training, workshops, or conferences aligned with their interests and career goals. 4. Structured Employee Appreciation: Establish programs like monthly awards or performance-based bonuses to consistently recognize and celebrate staff achievements. This creates a positive atmosphere and encourages excellence. 5. Peer-to-Peer Recognition: Foster a culture of peer acknowledgment, encouraging staff to appreciate each other's accomplishments. Implement systems like recognition boards or shout-out sessions to formalize and celebrate peer recognition.
