Agriculture in particular is struggling with prolonged periods of drought, while at the same time being the world’s leading user of the valuable resource of fresh water 💧. The question is therefore: What part can breeding 🌱 play in ensuring that plants make optimal use of available resources and deliver stable yields even under drought stress? At KWS, our plant breeders are already working on solutions for tomorrow – one example being wheat. KWS has set up a large experimental network to select plants that are better able to cope with early summer drought ☀️. #Let’sTalkBreeding #seedingthefuture

Agriculture in particular is struggling with prolonged periods of drought, while at the same time being the world’s leading user of the valuable resource of fresh water 💦. The question is therefore: What part can breeding play in ensuring that plants make optimal use of available resources and deliver stable yields even under drought stress ☀️? At KWS, our plant breeders 🌱 are already working on solutions for tomorrow – one example being barley, where the search for genetic material that indicates good drought tolerance begins as early as the pre-breeding stage. The aim is to breed adaptable varieties able to thrive under changing conditions. Learn more about pre-breeding here. https://ow.ly/HujN50TnRWy #LetsTalkBreeding #seedingthefuture

Agriculture in particular is struggling with extreme weather conditions. Amongst many others, these can be prolonged periods of drought, while at the same time being the world’s leading user of the valuable resource of fresh water 💦. The question is therefore: What part can breeding play in ensuring that plants make optimal use of available resources and deliver stable yields even under drought stress ☀️? At KWS, our plant breeders 🌱 are already working on solutions for tomorrow – one example being sorghum. In doing so, they take advantage of sorghum’s natural ability to survive even in extremely dry conditions, for example by means of its deep and widely branched root system, which enables sorghum to draw water from deeper layers of soil. Are you using the latest seed corn technology is when it comes to defending against drought? By using advanced breeding techniques, they have developed drought-resistant corn varieties that can thrive in challenging environmental conditions. This means you can now rely on more resilient crops to ensure a successful harvest, even in times of water scarcity. Check out this article from Ag Web that goes deeper into drought conditions from 2023: https://hubs.ly/Q02qtWcj0 #SeedCorn #DroughtResistance #FarmingInnovation #SustainableAgriculture

Prolonged #drought has affected Northern Africa for 6 years, have a clear impact on #agriculture and #foodsecurity. Increasing plant tolerance to moderate drought is a key strategy for #climateadaptation. Good understanding of crop physiological responses to drought can inform drought tolerance crop improvement programmes. Very good #Naturereview Earth&Environment paper by Vincent Vadez and other drought crop breeding experts, with very good visuals to explain how complex the plant response to drought is, and what to do with this crucial knowledge. To share to any plant breeders, #cropimprovement programme managers and any person dealing with drought adaptation planning. https://lnkd.in/gQMGYjyA Jon Hellin Jeffrey Ehlers Karine Chenu Nature Portfolio Graham Simpkins
