It is almost Mother's Day so let's talk about moms. In the U.S., there’s a striking gap in the time and resources allocated towards pregnancy versus the postpartum period. While a woman might visit her OBGYN 10-15 times during pregnancy, she’ll typically only visit once during the postpartum period. And while it’s commonplace for an expectant mother to take a birth education class, it is virtually unheard of for her to receive postpartum education. 88% of women feel unprepared to navigate the postpartum period. In New Zealand, after giving birth, moms can stay at a local birthing center, free of charge, where they will receive one-on-one care for them and their babies. In South Korea, eight out of 10 new mothers will stay at care centers, or a Joriwon, after giving birth. If you are pregnant, what can you do for YOU in your postpartum period? Can you ask for additional support in cleaning from family and friends? Can you setup meal delivery? #mentalhealth #therapy #wellness #postpartumcare #momsmatter

"Collaborative support of family is crucial for pregnant women Despite being in 2023, many pregnant women still rely on advice from their mothers and mothers-in-law regarding pregnancy and child healthcare. While their wisdom holds value, it may not always align with today's lifestyle. For a healthy pregnancy, a fresh approach is essential, and that's precisely what we're dedicated to providing at the Maternal Health Coach Community. We guide pregnant women through every step, recognizing the significance of collaborative care. At Maternal Health Coach Community, we not only educate expectant mothers but also empower family members with essential knowledge, stressing the involvement of every family member. Racism, and not Race affects women of color. We must go beyond talking about it, and take action. Action can be individual, as an organization, community/ society. 1. Patients should self-advocate. Write down your concerns. Speak up! Take a friend, family, colleague, or partner with you for clinical evaluation. 2. Learn the warning signs of #maternalmortality from #CDC or reputable societies like #ACOG 3. Community ownership is a big one. Communities must continue to speak up and educate the populace. Use events like baby showers, and sorority events to discuss important issues. Knowledge is Power! 4. Organizations and hospital systems are not left out :) 😄 Normalize discussions about respectful care, cultural competency, etc. The Cleveland Clinic Center for Infant and Maternal Health was created to address the above. We support at-risk birthing people and women during pregnancy and the first year of infant life. We acknowledge the role of structural racism in maternal and infant mortality and in addition to evidence-based excellent care, support our patients with: - Obstetric navigators - Community health workers - Perinatal Doulas. #blackhealth #blackmama #maternalmortality #maternalmentalhealth #maternalchildhealth #infanthealth
Racism in pregnancy care affects people of color every day. In our new expert view, an ob-gyn shares stories of Black patients’ concerns about being unheard and overlooked. Read this firsthand account of racial inequities in pregnancy care: https://bit.ly/3Iku0SK #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM

Did you know…. Maternal suicide is the leading direct cause of death between six weeks and one year after the end of pregnancy, accounting for 18% of the women who died. In2020, women were three times more likely to die by suicide during or up to six weeks after the end of pregnancy compared with 2017-2019. It is a perfect time to check-in with those in your life that are new mums. With the holidays approaching things can get particularly stressful. New mums may find that they are; - stuck inside due to the cold weather - feeling greater expectations from family - worrying about money - feeling a pressure to make the holidays “perfect” for their growing family There’s no need to overcomplicate things…simply check-in and listen. Simply giving someone space to talk, and listening to how they're feeling, can be really helpful in itself. If you find someone is finding it difficult, let them know that you're there when they are ready.
