Ensuring the safety of motherhood is crucial in saving newborn lives. Studies indicate that a considerable reduction in stillbirths and neonatal deaths is achievable by providing proper nourishment and quality care to all women throughout pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum phase. Mothers require continuous and comprehensive care, starting from the early stages of pregnancy until after childbirth + then some. It is essential for them to feel comfortable expressing all their worries, symptoms, and thoughts, and to receive support from nourishment to mental well-being, to everything in between. Babies need their moms, and moms need help. The well-being of babies is closely tied to the circumstances of their mothers. It is almost Mother's Day so let's talk about moms. In the U.S., there’s a striking gap in the time and resources allocated towards pregnancy versus the postpartum period. While a woman might visit her OBGYN 10-15 times during pregnancy, she’ll typically only visit once during the postpartum period. And while it’s commonplace for an expectant mother to take a birth education class, it is virtually unheard of for her to receive postpartum education. 88% of women feel unprepared to navigate the postpartum period. In New Zealand, after giving birth, moms can stay at a local birthing center, free of charge, where they will receive one-on-one care for them and their babies. In South Korea, eight out of 10 new mothers will stay at care centers, or a Joriwon, after giving birth. If you are pregnant, what can you do for YOU in your postpartum period? ~287,000 women died during and following pregnancy and childbirth in 2020, yet most maternal deaths could have been prevented. Almost 95% occurred in low and lower middle-income countries. The high number of maternal deaths in some areas of the world reflects inequalities in access to quality health services, according to the World Health Organization. Her PLAN (Her Pregnancy and Life Assistance Network) is a program that connects providers across seven categories of care, offering holistic support to women through comprehensive medical, social, and material support. “It’s important to get that 360-degree view of the care a woman needs both before and after birth and get her plugged into all of those different categories of care.” The Directory at HerPLAN.org connects providers across the categories of care so they can find one another and be able to start sending patients and clients in the direction of further ongoing comprehensive care. Women and families may also access the directory and find the help and resources they need to be in the position to carry a pregnancy to term and receive the care they and their babies require after birth. The common advice, even for pregnant women until recently, has been that caffeine is not an issue in small to moderate amounts. Yet a new meta-analysis that looked at 42 observational studies reveals that there really is no safe amount of caffeine for expectant mothers or those who are trying to get pregnant.
