After #Paris banned shared scooters in August, usage of shared bicycles more than doubled in the city, according to new research by Fluctuo. The same study finds that bikesharing rides, docked as well as dockless, are outpacing scootersharing rides across Europe (both 🛴 and 🛵 ). Exciting news from Fluctuo‘s latest European Mobility Index (Q2)! 🚀 In the ever-evolving world of urban mobility, here's a snapshot of what's been happening across Europe: Bikeshare on the Rise 🚲 #Bikeshare has seen a significant upswing, with a whopping 32% increase in combined bike ridership compared to 2022. Legacy system loyalty and operators replacing scooter fleets with bikes due to permits are the primary reasons. Scooters Facing Challenges 🛴🛵 On the flip side, scooters have experienced a downturn, with a 39% decrease in combined #scooter ridership. Interestingly, this decline is largely attributed to the moped ridership decrease (29%) caused by poor ridership and numerous operators leaving key markets. Car Share Gaining Traction 🚗 An intriguing development in this quarter's index is the emergence of car share as the new mobility trend, seeing a 14% increase in ridership vs. 2022. The shift to #freefloating operating model and additional 6000 vehicles are facilitating this increase Docked Bikeshare Dominance 🅿️ Docked bikeshare systems are proving to be the go-to choice, being used 2.8 times more than free-floating bikes and 2.3 times more than scooters. This is further iterated with 6.9M trips being taken by the top 3 docked systems (Vélib' Métropole, Pedalem Barcelona & Santander Cycles) 383% more than the top 3 freefloating systems (#Paris, #London & #Copenhagen) This indicates that the reliability of docked systems is highly valued by riders. But why are these changes happening? 🧐 The key drivers include #permit and fleet size adjustments in cities like Paris, Rome, and Brussels. Additionally, the shift from bikes to scooters in Paris has been a noteworthy factor influencing these trends. Fluctuo's Annual Report: #Micromobility in Focus 🔍 On the eve of Autonomy in Paris, Fluctuo have released their Annual Shared Mobility Report for 2023 which delves into insightful data on shared 🚲, 🛴, 🛵 & 🚗 across 115 European cities 🌍 So whilst I have the luxury of sitting on the Eurostar on the way to the event with some semi-decent wifi I thought I'd share my key takeaways on the micromobility data 📊 1️⃣ The industry continues to Grow! 🌱 Across all shared mobility modes in the cities surveyed there are now almost 1M vehicles, an additional 60M trips were taken and overall user generated revenue increased by over €400M 2️⃣ Profitability is King (not cash) 👑 2023 was the year that economic viability, or as #VC's put it, profitability was the industry buzzword replaced e-scooters, adjusted-EBITDA, dockless and AI in previous years 👀. Expect this to continue throughout 2024 and into 2025 with more bankrupticies and M&A activity like the recent Dott/TIER Mobility merger, the reported nextbike by TIER spin-out and Superpedestrian acquisition to come. 3️⃣ Bikes are Best, and Docked Ones even Better 🚲 (based on the data) With double the average trip per vehicle per day (TVD) compared to their dockless counterparts (both 🚲 & 🛴) there the publics choice. This is evident when scooter companies are diversifying their modal mix to include bikes with fleets up 50% vs. last year. BUT... this doesn't account for public funding availability, single operator models and better tender conditions that docked bikeshare has compared to the dockless permit model. 🅿️ 4️⃣ Dockless Operator Market Share is more Consistent than Docked 📍 The Top 5 docked #bikeshare tenders in Europe saw 5 different operators with winning bids, whereas the Top 5 #dockless tenders (🚲's & 🛴's) saw Dott and Lime come out on top with RideMovi, Bird and Tier in close second. The fact that cities select a single operator for docked and multi for dockless skews the data slightly, but it is clear that the dockless market is seeing the development of European heavyweights 🥊 whilst docked operators are seemingly more national to regional in their expansion. The upcoming docked tenders in London 🇬🇧, Bilbao 🇪🇸, Munich 🇩🇪, Turin 🇮🇹 and Brussels 🇧🇪 will paint a clearer picture. 5️⃣ Europe wins the #Micromobility Ryder Cup 🇪🇺🇺🇸 And not by a small margin. 🅿️ 1.5x the number of docked bikes 🛴 3x the number of scooters 🚲 9x the number of dockless bikes Has rapid consolidation and tighter regulations experienced in North America in recent years stifled growth potential? What better place to discuss future urban mobility than Amsterdam? Just spent two exciting days with the Europcar Mobility Group Executive Committee to review our #strategy and Value Creation Plan, but also to get inspired by future mobility concepts available already today in the City of Amsterdam. Our friends (and shareholders) PON HOLDINGS BV have been great hosts at their Move Amsterdam HQ. Many thanks to Janus Smalbraak and his Pon team to give us such helpful insights into their own strategic initiatives like Swapfiets or Lensor. Pon’s path to become the World’s largest bike producer over the last 10 years, on top of being one of the most successful car and van importer and retailer, is also a case study in strategic portfolio management. As an unexpected bonus, we could even spend some happy moments with Vuelta winner Sepp Kuss as he came to celebrate his victory with Team Jumbo-Visma, sponsored by Pon. Grateful for another successful year for this amazing team in an otherwise challenging environment for micromobility. One thing stands clear at this year end: bike share remains the backbone of micromobility, and is the real alternative to the private car in city centres. Other trends may come and go with the wind. They will, why not, be deployed cities depending on the local circumstances, but not with a global one-size-fits-all. At least not within this decade. Staying loyal to our vision, we believe in a sustainable and gradual takeover of urban space by humans and their choice of mobility service, spearheaded by bike share. Bike share paves the way for integrated mobility, as it always has done, and Urban Sharing will be there to empower it. In 2024, we aim at doubling the numbers you see below, while staying responsible and sustainable. No inflated numbers, no adjusted EBITDAs, no imaginary carbon-emission savings. Just a bunch of committed people ready to change the course of history through the power of two-wheelers, executed with a lot of patience and doses of hard work. See you in 2024, which I believe will be memorable in terms of the explosion of bike share systems in Europe and beyond. Let's pave the way for the decisive mobility shift!
