3+ years ago, I reached out to Mert Salur on LinkedIn out of the blue after seeing Getir announce its intent to launch in markets outside of Turkey. A week later, Turancan Salur offered me my dream job, building a service I loved and used – since then, (1) I had the opportunity to launch the biz in the UK and US, (2) had several roles across functions including operations, transformation, people and partnerships (3) was part of our post-merger integration efforts; all while making some real friendships along the way. Recently, my ride with getir ended. It’s been talked about enough but I wanted to share a personal experience I had at the company: During my time at getir, I lost my granddad and dad after multiple bouts of sickness. The founders and leadership gave me the time and space to be with my family, and made room for the uncertainty that came with it all - emotionally and logistically. I know plenty of immigrants like me who don't have that privilege. I didn't just have a great time career-wise at getir, I knew that the people I worked with and for always had my back. There's a long list of people to thank for that starting with Turancan Salur and including Elif Çar, Berker Yağcı, Ahmet Dedeoğlu, Sadık Gençoğlan, Vishal Verma, Selin Barlin Aral, Metin Hacıoğlu, Insia Valika, Ceyda Erten among others. As much as I'd have liked this journey to end a different way, this has reinforced a sense of urgency for me - life feels too short not to (try to) spend it on what you love. I am really excited to pivot my own career now - In the last few months, I’ve had the chance to explore something I've always dreamt of - artist management - alongside some real legends in the UK music scene. Thank you Sonnyjim and Pavan Mukhi for taking a leap of faith in me! This post by Amina Mattern is extremely relatable. The question "Where's home" is always a challenge for #ThirdCultureKids. I continue to face this question in my 30s as I navigate new challenges in my life in Canada. Despite this, hiring #TCKs or TCAs (Third Culture Adults) is one of the best things companies can do in my opinion. ✈ TCKs have the ability to adapt to changing situations and challenges. Constantly moving and adapting to different places, people, and situations makes them incredibly resourceful and creative. ✈ They have the empathy and sensitivity to understand people in difficult and unexpected situations. ✈ Most, if not all of them are bilingual or multilingual and this puts them in a better position to liaise with a company's clients, stakeholders, and customers from different cultural backgrounds and countries. This includes a stronger understanding and respect for a wide range of cultural customs. The above might not be specific only to TCKs. However, these are definitely some of the qualities that make them stand out.
