During the panel discussion on Europe’s role in global aviation, focusing on shaping policies for sustainable growth, CEO Yvonne Makolo emphasized the importance of investing in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the continent, which is currently not available. There is a need to balance accelerating aviation penetration, which remains low in the continent and doing this sustainably. Makolo stressed the crucial need for more incentives in SAF production.

It has been a truly enriching few days at the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Supply Chain Initiative in London hosted by Sustainable Aviation Fuel Innovation Programme (SAF IP) and Innovate UK Business Connect! These are the top 3 insights that I've taken away: 💡100% SAF flights aren’t that far away and the lifecycle carbon reductions (64%) by going 100% SAF is phenomenal! I was initially uncertain how the Virgin Atlantic Flight100 occurred due to the need for aromatics in the fuel to ensure safety while flying until I came across Virent, Inc, whose synthetic aromatics were used in the first ever 100% SAF transatlantic flight. That’s such an exciting development in the SAF space and moves us closer to 100% SAF flights in the future, whether it is 100% drop-in or not! 💡SAF mandates are appearing worldwide and the UK is one of the most recent regions that came up with theirs! Indeed, using both demand and supply-side mechanisms would be crucial in supporting and ensuring the uptake of SAF moving forward, especially with the emergence of supplier obligations (both main obligations and Power-to-liquid obligations) and the revenue certainty mechanism. 💡As much as it is a SAF conference, carbon removals being thrown into this portfolio to reduce emissions is extremely crucial! Carbon removals play a crucial role in ensuring NEGATIVE EMISSIONS instead of just reducing avoided emissions. Ultimately, the work we do aims to achieve NET-ZERO and even better, NET-NEGATIVE EMISSIONS. Companies should look into a variety of decarbonisation pathways in the aviation industry to make that happen. Such an enriching and informative conference and kudos to the team behind it for gathering together professionals crucial to the world’s SAF supply chain! Air New Zealand has marked a significant milestone with the delivery of 500,000 litres of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Wellington, blended by ExxonMobil and produced by EcoCeres, Inc. in China. This SAF, derived from used cooking oil, represents a pioneering step towards reducing carbon emissions in aviation. "We are committed to leading the charge towards a lower-carbon future for aviation," stated Kiri Hannifin, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer at Air New Zealand. "SAF is pivotal in this journey, and our recent delivery underscores our dedication to sustainability." The airline plans to utilize this SAF on its ATR aircraft fleet, emphasizing its role in reducing the carbon footprint of its operations. Looking ahead, Air New Zealand is proactively seeking collaborations with SAF innovators and startups to secure future supply partnerships. Hannifin highlighted the importance of early involvement in SAF procurement to maintain competitiveness in global aviation markets. "Securing SAF supplies is crucial as we navigate global SAF quotas and mandates," added Hannifin. "Our strategic partnerships and proactive approach will ensure we meet growing demand across Asia-Pacific and beyond."
