I'm continually inspired by leaders who not only envision a better future through design but actively shape it. Lorcan O’Herlihy, FAIA’s approach at Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects [LOHA] is a powerful example of this. While the article beautifully highlights his commitment to social equity and architectural innovation, I’d like to touch on a few more aspects that resonate deeply with my own professional philosophy. Lorcan’s ability to seamlessly integrate environmental sustainability into his projects stands out distinctly. His designs do not just respond to the immediate needs of the urban landscape but also address broader environmental concerns, making each project both a local solution and a global statement. Moreover, his dedication to public art installations and the way these are woven into the architectural fabric of his projects is truly commendable. These installations do more than beautify—they spark dialogue, engage communities, and elevate the human spirit. Reflecting on Lorcan’s career, his journey underscores the importance of flexibility and evolution in one's professional path. Starting from his diverse cultural exposures in his early years to the strategic shifts in his practice, his story is a testament to the dynamic nature of architectural innovation. As we share and discuss Lorcan's impactful contributions to our field, it's a reminder of the power of architecture as a transformative force in society. The evolution of #architecture and space utilization is fascinating. In the #office world, we've seen everything from multi-office plans, to open floor plans, to accommodating remote access, to now - the new work era of #flexibility and #amenities. 2023 was the onset of this paradigm shift and as a result, architects are fielding a new set of tenant demands. Fast Company highlighted six new innovative designs from 2023 that offer a glimpse into where the field is headed this year and beyond. #NYC based architecture firms dominated the article >> https://lnkd.in/ggbKnYwF SO – IL - Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU) - Rojkind Arquitectos - Callaghan Horiuchi - Marlon Blackwell Architects - American Museum of Natural History - Studio Gang - Natural Hazards Engineering - BOMA International

The Timeless Connection Between Architecture and Humanity In the intricate dance between architecture and humanity, Frank Gehry's profound statement resonates deeply: "Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness." This encapsulates the essence of how architecture intertwines with human existence, leaving an indelible mark on society, culture, and history. Architecture is more than just structures; it is a reflection of the values, aspirations, and identity of a civilization at a given moment. Each building tells a story, echoing the spirit of its era while transcending temporal boundaries. From the majestic pyramids of ancient Egypt to the sleek skyscrapers of modern metropolises, architecture serves as a testament to human ingenuity and creativity across the ages. But beyond its temporal context, architecture profoundly shapes human experiences and interactions. It provides shelter, facilitates commerce, inspires creativity, and fosters community. Whether it's the grandeur of a cathedral that invokes awe, the intimacy of a cozy home that nurtures warmth, or the innovation of a sustainable skyscraper that symbolizes progress, architecture influences our daily lives in myriad ways. Moreover, architecture serves as a canvas for cultural expression and social change. It reflects societal values, challenges norms, and fosters inclusivity. Through thoughtful design and meticulous planning, architects have the power to transform communities, promote sustainability, and enhance quality of life for generations to come. In embracing Gehry's vision, we recognize that architecture is not merely a product of its time, but a timeless testament to the enduring connection between humanity and the built environment. Life, Death, and the Virtual Incarnation of an Architecture. The Garden Office Project, Carlton, Victoria, Australia. Unbuilt. The creation of Architecture begins with the conception of an idea that develops embryonically over time, maturing into what it is meant to become. For some, the evolutionary path is fated to an early death and incarnation to exist only in the virtual world. Drawing inspiration from the destructed built forms in the aftermath of a catastrophic event and the work of abstract expressionist artist John Chamberlain (1927-2011), this architecture explores the concept of beauty through destruction as a form of aesthetic expression. Embracing physical techniques like bending, contorting, torsional buckling, and the application of force to express the inherent energy within materials, this project turns the expression of destruction into architectural form. Nestled within the Heritage sensitive precinct of Drummond Street Carlton, Victoria, this project became a casualty of the Covid epidemic, ceasing construction shortly after the completion of its concrete groundworks. Thank-you to all that worked on this project, consultants, trades, and of course our wonderful client, that was equally as sad as we were to not see it realized as a building, inhabited and enjoyed.

Director, Project Development @ Clark Builders | Red Seal Carpenter | Mass Timber | Decarbonization | Enhanced + Behavioural Contracting Practitioner | Let's go outside...
A few bite-sized insights from Day 1 of the The Alberta Association of Architects #BanffSession 2024: Rebuild. Learn more here: https://banffsession.ca/ 1. Omar Gandhi (Keynote), in a counterthought to the thesis that one must “firm hop” to build experience, and that early work is somehow “lesser” shared that not a single person has left OMAR GANDHI ARCHITECTS INC since joining(!) and posed the question of “how can we retain the grit and curiosity of our early projects” 2. Robert Claiborne and Kyle Auch (Concurrent PD Session) presenting on Glenbow: A Museum Re-imagined shared how DIALOG, in acting on a museum who’s structure was so resistant to change, brave and thoughtful deletions and insertions were necessary. In a building with no front door, the existing corner stairwell was the “Gordian Knot” (I had to look it up(!); a metaphor for a problem so intricate it can’t be solved) that had to go away to open it up to the street. 3. Primo Orpilla (Keynote) of Studio O+A showcased brilliant work with some of the world’s most compelling brands, including adidas HQ in Portland, built by Clark Builders partner Turner Construction Company. On trend, in designing workplaces with 100% assignable seating, examples of how to draw in and help employees to feel part of things abounded with a few novel concepts (to me) around how the “Home Room” and “Water Cooler” concept and technology can do just that. And plants…lots of plants! 4. Finally, Henry Tsang, Architect, AAA, FRAIC and Dr. Matt Patterson (Concurrent PD Session) in presenting their academic work on Dissapearing Chinatowns, asking “What is Chinatown; or moreso Who is Chinatown?”, charged the room with the question of whether “we” as architects (not me, I just build buildings) are well trained to do serious research, especially in the context of pre-design which can be outside of Architectural Services. Finally, one of the more subtle enjoyments of this time of ideation and reconnection with friends and colleagues new and old is, without a doubt being in these mountains again and spelling like a rose…. Le Labo Fragrances for the win.

For this year’s Studio Lates we created a set of guiding principles for our work in retrofit. Gort Scott’s Retrofit and Heritage Knowledge Group composed a list of 10 aims to share with studio visitors. You can read the manifesto below and download a PDF to your desktop for better legibility. There’s also a large-scale version displayed on our office wall. In our work, we prioritise the retrofit of existing buildings and have a deep care for historic fabric, learning from its layout and construction. Retrofit appeals to us on many levels: It answers our sense of civic and sustainable responsibility and our appetite for problem solving. Fundamentally, we enjoy it: The constraints of retrofit are a springboard for good design, demanding the imagination to pursue unexpected directions, questioning, and collaborating until everything fits into place. ‘Studio Late with Gort Scott’ took place 20th June 2024, part of London Festival of Architecture. #RetrofitManifesto #sustainablearchitecture #retrofit

It reflects the culture, values, and technological advancements of its time while remaining timeless in its ability to inspire and uplift.
