Our Policy Lead, Stephen Caulfield, was in Glasgow yesterday for #LearningPlacesScotland 2024. This conference and exhibition brings together learners, educators, designers, consultants, and manufacturers for discussion and collaboration on how we deliver high-quality learning spaces for all. Though there is much work still to be done, we are encouraged by the growing recognition of the role that school and college estate design has on the experiences of people with Additional Support Needs (ASN) - and how trends towards expansive, open-plan (and noisy) spaces is negatively impacting the experiences of people with differences in sensory profile and social communication.

I'm over the moon to share that our paper titled " Contextualised Strategies and Interventions for Ageing in Place in Low Population Density Areas," has been accepted for publication in the prestigious Archnet-IJAR: International Journal of Architectural Research! Farzad Pour Rahimian Mina Najafi Phillippa Carnemolla Sergio R. 🔍 Archnet-IJAR: International Journal of Architectural Research is a leading international journal known for its high impact in the field of architecture and built environment studies. Archnet-IJAR publishes innovative and influential research, making a substantial contribution to advancing knowledge and practice in Architectural and Design Research as well as Cities and Urban Research. 📄 Our paper explores strategies that people use to age in place (including new builds, and minor and major adaptations), focusing on LPDAs as part of a systematic product development process guided by the Design Council’s #DoubleDiamond Design Framework. It specifically describes part of our research during the #Discovery phase. The results provide contextualised BE interventions applicable to creating age-friendly communities, focusing on house design and service delivery from a product design approach. Most of the research available and policies to support ageing in place focus on urban settings, and with this paper aimed to better understand this phenomenon within rural communities and settings. I believe it will have a meaningful impact on practical application, extending beyond the residential built environment to include assistive technology products and inclusive design. In short, educational institutions today see themselves as "spaces for teams". Through the design of functional green areas, the aim is to create a more fluid connectivity between the different spaces of the campus, which are sometimes fragmented and divided by public roads. Green therefore acts as both a visual and spatial connector.
