ARCHITEKTUR MACHT SCHULE! Our September/October newsletter focuses on how school buildings are always a reflection of societal development. We need spaces that promote social skills, encourage independence, and help children and young people find orientation in a rapidly changing world. In short, educational institutions today see themselves as "spaces for teams". A well-structured spatial framework where individuals collaborate in various configurations, along with areas for retreat to foster individual concentration or relaxation. These educational buildings and their outdoor spaces are places of encounter where children and young people can grow together, develop a sense of community, unleash creativity, and practice democracy. Some of our new school buildings illustrate what this can look like in practice. “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” - Winston Churchill, 1943 The link between intentional design and society is linear – because while architecture shapes our students, it’s the students that shape our future. And campuses worldwide are sparing no detail, specifying materials for both functionality and aesthetics. These elements breathe life into universities, building community and encouraging academic success. Don’t neglect the details. How are we building (or renovating) the next generation of schools to meet health, resilience and climate targets? Here’s a FREE online symposium designed to offer answers and demonstrate solutions… Sign up below (and share with your local school boards or design decisionmakers.)
The semester might be winding down, but there's never been a better time to learn about how we can support the education of our youth, from preschool to universities. That's why we're thrilled to announce our next event, Academic Performance: A Passive House Schools Symposium. Learn how Passive House educational buildings can help push towards electrification, provide public shelter in extreme weather, create flexible infrastructure to serve the needs of a fast-changing educational environment with presentations from Naomi C.O. Beal from phME-passivhausMAINE, Ann-Marie Fallon from Architype, Richard Lo from Kaplan Thompson Architects, Timothy Lock from OPAL Architecture, and Barry McCarron from South West College. Join us on June 20th from Noon-4:00PM ET for this free online symposium! Today, we pause to honour the children who never came home, the Survivors, and their families. National Truth and Reconciliation Day is an opportunity for us to reflect on the legacy of residential schools and engage with Indigenous history and culture as part of the ongoing journey of reconciliation. As architects, we recognize the need to decolonize our practice. Architecture has historically been used as a tool of colonial power, from residential schools to institutional buildings that marginalized Indigenous peoples. Today, we have the opportunity to transform our work into a tool for healing and empowerment. Our partnership with Smoke Architecture Inc. on the Makwa Waakaa’igan Indigenous Centre of Cultural Excellence at Algoma University is an example of this. Once a residential school, Shingwauk Hall is now being reimagined as a place for healing, dialogue, and cultural preservation, led by the vision of the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association. Decolonizing design starts with listening. It means working alongside Indigenous communities to ensure that their knowledge, culture, and values shape the spaces we create. This is not just about addressing the past but building a future where architecture supports cultural identity and well-being. We encourage reflection today, and every day, as we strive toward a more just and inclusive future.

Community colleges are more attractive than ever—by design and reputation, as we share in our latest #Insights article. A true labor of love, our teams design and develop strategic plans, renovation, reuse, and new building projects that honor these institutions’ standing in their communities, strengthen their ties to area universities and employers, and welcome the broadly diverse population of their students. “We are saying with our actions that, like four-year universities, #communitycolleges also deserve architecture with a big ‘A,’ because the work they are doing is very impactful indeed,” says Omar Calderon, AIA, principal at Perkins Eastman. 🌟 Project Spotlight 🌟 "Thermodynamic City" by Spitzer students Carlos Rueda M Arch '24, Zhenhao Huang MUP '24, and Sara Abousaid MUP '24 reimagines urban living through the lens of sustainability and community. Developed in the Graduate Urban Design Program Advanced Studio – Urban Design Lab, this project explores innovative, energy-efficient solutions for communal living. Guided by Professors Julio Salcedo-Fernandez and Marcus Wilford, Thermodynamic City challenges conventional urban design with forward-thinking, ecologically-conscious approaches. Urban ecology and mitigating urban heat islands integrating ecology and technology for climate-resilient cities explore technological and ecological protocols implemented in urban areas to combat urban heat island effects, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change, and improve overall urban health and sustainability. Mitigating the heat island effect requires a multifaceted approach that incorporates sun and wind and wind analysis, the strategic creation of green spaces, and innovative measures such as recycling excess heat to power urban areas. By understanding the interaction between sunlight, wind patterns, and urban structures, cities can implement sustainable solutions to alleviate elevated temperatures and enhance overall environmental quality. This is one of the projects featured in this year's Dezeen School Show. 📢 What makes a square? 📍 Place des Remparts, Esch-sur-Alzette (LU) In a wonderful collaboration, the Architecture Students Association and Masters of Architecture students at the University of Luxembourg, with support from the City of Esch, organized an engaging event for Neighbours’ Day. The activity, held at the heart of Place des Remparts, brought students and local stakeholders together. Through informal conversations, they explored ideas and shared perspectives about the junction, fostering a sense of community and collaborative urban design. This approach is crucial for their design studio project, where they are exploring concepts like how squares foster a sense of belonging and conviviality. The students are examining how this particular junction can be transformed into a square, considering important elements such as housing dynamics, stakeholders, and mobility. They aim to incorporate intricate parameters of Place des Remparts, addressing gaps in Esch’s existing mobility plan by involving these matrices comprehensively.
