Keeping it Personal We want you to treat the Legal Ops Career space as your independent space - where you can support your peers with useful content and insights. The content we have currently takes a look at qualities of a legal ops person, how to develop your personal brand, as well as long reads on CLM and the process for procuring tech. We are keen on getting more though to make it an indispensable resource. With that in mind we are looking for the following personal content at the moment (500 - 750 words): - Career stories (what you do now and what you enjoy about it, how did you get there and what tips would you give to those plotting a similar path) - 'A Day in the Life' article to explain what a typical day at work looks like As well as, a response to these questions (circa 500 words): - Do I need to speak publicly at events to advance in my career? - Is it better to be a generalist or a specialist? (for those that consult on legal tech) - What's the best way of managing vendor relationships as an in-house legal ops person? Please feel free to keep the questions coming! 🚀 #legalops #legaltech

I help GCs and legal teams deliver real 'value' | I’m also a leadership and team coach focusing on purpose, alignment and culture | I champion purpose-led value in legal and beyond | I’m also a meditation teacher
Are you an in house lawyer? Do you help with sales contracts or other critical deals? Do you want to help your business speed up sales and increase trust? I've spent a lot of my career (since my Yahoo days) supporting sales teams, speeding up processes, delivering revenue faster, delighting customers/partners. Because it really should be a 'delightful' process. In the last few years with Denis Potemkin through both LexSolutions and Majoto, we've been doing that with a greater emphasis on using legal design (i.e. design thinking applied to legal documents and processes) to achieve those outcomes. We've: 💥 speeded up processes by up to 80%, 💥 increased self-serve adoption by sales teams by 90%, and 💥 generated outstanding feedback for the legal team from their sales counterparts. So, we're super-excited to be sharing some of those learnings (along with some opportunities to play) within the amazing community that is In-House Connect, run by my good friend Shai Mehani. It's on 12th March at 4pm UK, 9am PST, 12pm EST. Link to the event in the comments. (And for sales leads in my network, feel free to ping this to your legal team, if of interest.) Of course, we'll also talk about how/where legal design can be applied in other areas, but this focus on sales is important to demonstrate quick and real ROI for the businesses so many of us support. See you there? 😁 #lawyers #legalops #salesops #legalinnovation #legaltechnology #legaldesign

The only LI-appropriate word I can think of to describe my current project is: nightmare. From top to bottom, everything that could go wrong, has. There is no single aspect of this project that has not made me want to run away - to literally get in the car and drive until… In fact, the 2 previous contractors in charge of this project before I came along did just that. But, even with every single day of the past few months being a day I practice not yelling at (alleged) grown ups, this project has been an amazing learning experience. This project has helped me solidify every Legal Ops tenet I already knew to be true and some I was on the fence about. Below are my top 5 takeaways... ✨ There is no such thing as over communication. Very few people are reading the Slack announcements AND the company-wide email announcements AND the newsletter AND the direct emails AND the … (sorry Comms team!). Send messages every which way you can. Get a carrier pigeon, hire a skywriter, tell the pastor to announce it on Sunday - just get the word out and get it out at a regular cadence. ✨ No process should ever be changed nor should any tool ever be implemented without prior discussion with the end user. Never. As in not ever. If you feel like this requires further explanation, you need to hire a legal ops pro. Because they get it. ✨ No process should ever be changed nor should any tool ever be implemented without a legal ops pro at the helm. Never. As in not ever. If you feel like this requires further explanation, you need to hire a legal ops pro. ✨ Contractors and consults don’t have the institutional knowledge required to implement a CLM and/or streamline a process in 6 months. These types of projects require an understanding of your specific business conditions which is learned over time and CLMs require ongoing, daily administration for the life of the system. Therefore, you need to hire a legal ops pro. ✨ When implementing legal tech or changing a legal process, do it with a legal ops pro. #LegalOps #LegalOperations #CLMImplementation #LegalTech #LegalProcessImprovements #DosandDonts

How do you define Legal Operations? One of the first themes in the 'Defining Legal Ops Career Path' project (managed by me through Legal Ops Career) is about what Legal Operations is and what it isn't - and what roles fit into Legal Ops. The key reason for starting off with this theme of discussion is to understand perceptions of what it is by people that work within it. If you take a look at the mini slide deck attached it reflects 13 different interpretations of what legal operations is (picked up from the first two pages of a Google search for 'definition of legal operations'). In isolation I don't think there any issues with any of these definitions but as a new entrant to the space seeing a wide variety of definitions I think I'd be confused as to what it actually is. On top of that some of these definitions specifically mention it relates to the 'in-house' setting (I suspect as that is who they are targeting!). However, does that mean for example those in law firms or consultancies carrying out legal ops work aren't working in legal ops? As a legal ops person turned marketer I kind of feel like we should have a punchier definition that is short, simple and easy to understand. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of the discussions about this in the project! What are your thoughts? #legalops The Legal Technologist

There's a lot of talk about the highly sought after "first legal hire" role. Rightfully so - it's an exciting position! But so far this year, I've seen a greater number of 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥 legal hire roles. Startups obviously took a beating in 2023. But now that the market is correcting itself, the GCs who toughed it out solo are finally getting the approved headcount for a 2nd hire. Naturally, it's 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳 tempting to rush into hiring after being solo for so long. But hiring needs to be done with strong & clear intention. Before running to get the first "perfect candidate" you can find, you HAVE to take a step back and evaluate your needs, or you risk an unnecessarily drawn out search and/or quick turnover. These are 3 big 2nd legal hire trends I've been seeing: ✨ 1: Specialized GCs are bringing on attorneys with completely different skills to balance out the in-house coverage & reduce outside counsel spend. Lots of corporate-focused GCs hiring healthcare/regulatory attorneys. ✨ 2: Generalist GCs are more keen on all-around support. Think more junior versions of themselves who have a solid foundation & a hunger to develop/grow. ✨3: Both types of GCs who are drowning in paperwork and processes are turning to legal ops pros, contracts managers, and/or paralegals. Like I said before - while it can be tempting to chase after the shiny senior attorney, depending on your workload, these can be more efficient & cost-effective hires.

🚀 Aa a law firm leader, are you wondering whether to hire a generalist or a specialist? 🤔 The debate is on fire in the community! 🔥 💼 Generalists offer versatility and strategic vision, while specialists bring deep expertise and innovation (and you see a lot of them dedicated to technology or marketing). 🌟 The ideal legal ops leader may just be a T-shaped pro - broad skills with deep expertise in one or two areas. 🎯 🤝 Organizations can thrive with a mix of generalist and specialist skills, meeting diverse needs effectively. ⚖️ It's all about evolving with changing business demands and nurturing professionals accordingly. 🌱 #LegalOps #Specialist #Generalist #ProfessionalDevelopment #BusinessEvolution
