𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙄 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙬 𝙐𝙥: 𝙎𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙨 𝙄𝙣𝙙𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙮 𝙀𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙞𝙫𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙨 𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙮. Ayana Lawson didn’t dream of working in professional sports. Helping Oklahoma City Thunder players be successful on-and-off the court. In fact, growing up in Alabama, she didn’t even know people like her could have a job in the industry. There were no pro teams nearby. Just the coaches and players she saw on TV. “I was naive to think that was it.” But when she landed an internship with the Memphis Grizzlies, something clicked. She wasn’t just an intern. She was working under Jerry West. The logo himself. A kid from Prattville learning from one of the greatest. How did that happen? It opened her eyes to a world of careers she never knew existed. Before that, she worked at a children’s museum. Babysitting. That internship didn’t feel like part of some grand career plan. It was just a shot she took. And she’s grateful for every lesson she learned. That’s something she always tells young people: “It’s okay not to know.” You’re not supposed to have everything figured out at 17 or 18. Some people are 40, 50, even 60 and still don’t know what they want to be. And that’s fine!” So take chances. Ask questions. Dabble in new fields. Internships, like the one Ayana did, can open doors to industries you never considered. In the end, you might discover that your skills are transferable. And there’s a place for you in sports, entertainment, or any field you choose. But the only way you’ll know? Try. *** Want to make a positive impact on an undergrad or recent grad’s life? One of our interns last year asked me a good question: what bad habit did you overcome that helped you most professionally? Frankly, it was hard to choose! Learning from mistakes has become somewhat of a specialty. But the first bad habit that came to mind was this: Worrying. Usually starting around 2am. I do that much less now. In fact, hardly ever. Thankfully, someone a while back enlightened me to the phrase “worrying makes you suffer twice” – and that clicked. Work hard, sure. Do your best, of course. Seek help when needed, absolutely! But if you’ve done all that, worrying isn’t going to get you extra credit. Especially in the middle of the night. There’s more than enough to puzzle out during daylight hours, so give yourself some grace and save 2am for sleep. We just wrapped up another great internship with the addition of Luke Brassard to our team this summer. Luke, a graduate of St Sebastian school, is getting ready to start his sophomore year at Holy Cross. The way Luke came across our company is pretty interesting. He originally applied for an internship at the Needham Town Departments, but unfortunately, they didn't have any openings. However, someone from the town suggested him to me, sharing his resume and saying he might be a good fit. The rest is history, as they say. During the three months of the internship, what can we expect from interns? What can we teach them? I think there's a great opportunity to pass on some important lessons. In the end, it's up to the interns themselves to analyze, soak up, and put these teachings into practice. For me personally, I prioritize the following things: 1. Accountability - getting tasks done quickly and efficiently. 2. Resourcefulness - figuring out creative solutions. 3. Planning - like I always say, "proper planning prevents poor performance." 4. Relentlessness - the determination to finish tasks, no matter what obstacles come up. Luke has consistently shown these qualities since day one, earning the respect of our whole team in no time. During her time at DMSF, Quinnyata participated in Affinity Groups and held a Walgreens Corporate Internship. Today, she works as a freelance producer and costume manager. Let’s hear what advice she has to share! 💙What was DMSF’s impact on you? 💛I learned that staying connected with my community and creating connections that last a life time can benefit me more than any fleeting moments. The people I have met through Daniel Murphy have influenced me in a number of ways. So many doors have opened for me that I never thought I would have access to because of volunteers and staff that have reached out to me during and after my scholarship program. It would be an understatement to say that I have gained a number of mentors that have paved a way for someone like me to flourish in the arts and make a career out of something that was just my passion and curiosity at the time. 💙Why was receiving a good education so important to you? 💛The older I get the more impactful my education history has been for me. With every decision I make, the skills and ability to navigate through society were just basic lessons taught to me through programming and courses dedicated to ensuring my success in the past. I may not have fully understood the weight of an amazing education in my teenage years but seeing how things could have been more troubling for me now makes me all the more grateful for the opportunities I had. This ever changing appreciation for my education is what makes it so important. 💙What advice do you have for current Murphy Scholars? 💛Take advantage of everything. This seems like a simple task but I think at a young age it’s easy to look past the small details but every thing that comes your way is a potential door that can opened and explored. What's your story? We all have one. What we share is dependent on two parts: our historical context and who is asking the question. Imagine your a recent graduate with a preschooler at home who's been training for a marathon to balance school. Speaking to a potential employer? You're going to focus on your internship, your degree, and how you can benefit their company. Hanging out at a parent's group? Your probably swapping stories about exhaustion and finding the right toy/sock/sippy cup for a smooth day. In the Expo que for RunDisney? You're conversation most likely involves Mickey Ears, Hokas, and the best way to capture a jump shot for Photopass. Every story is true to the reality and yet each has it's place. Part of my passion is helping people find the right context for their story. Whether it's figuring out where to start updating a website or creating a training, context and purpose help determine what is important.
