📣 Pleased to share, with Minister for Transport Hong Tat Chee and ITE CEO Khah Gek Low, we have launched The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) Scholarship Fund (IESF) raising about $210,000 to offer scholarships to needy and deserving students taking up engineering courses at University, Polytechnic and Institute of Technical Education. As IES Executive Director and Chairman of the National Engineers Day 2024 organising committee, I shared with The Straits Times that the need for engineering talent with “green skills” has become increasingly important due to concerns over climate change and the transition to a more sustainable and low-carbon economy. I also mentioned that given the growing need for infrastructure development as well, more needs to be done in Singapore to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics. “We must shift the perception that engineering is difficult” and IES is now on a mission to showcase how engineering has evolved by organising technical talks and visits. During my studies, the engineering faculty had the highest enrolment at my university. It's disheartening to see that engineering courses, once highly sought after, now face extremely low enrolment. More alarming is the news from our local press stating that some Malaysian universities have had their engineering accreditation revoked and programs discontinued due to low student intakes. As we aim to become a developed nation, a strong engineering workforce is crucial for economic growth, infrastructure, innovation, and sustainable development. Can we achieve our national goals without having supports from engineering workforce? This is something we need to seriously consider. Scored 96% in 12th class. I decided to study Environmental Engineering. Everyone around me called me stupid. They said I was going to regret it. When I went to take admission for undergraduate, even teachers advised me to enroll in computer science. They told me that there was no scope in this field and you are too good to study environmental engineering. I ignored everyone and pursued my dream. With my hard work, I became the university topper. And again, this time no one praised/supported me. Why? ”Environmental hai. top karna aasan tha”, they all said. (It’s easy to get the top rank in Environmental Engineering major) Because of my academic excellence, I secured - Scholarship to puruse internship National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU) - Selected for internship at E&Y - Selected for internship at Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) - Also, internship at Centre for Fire, Explosion and Environment Safety (DRDO) And now he has secured 2X 100% scholarships 100k+ Euros, and several top admits to study in Europe, Canada etc. But it doesn’t matter, does it? He didn't do study computer science after all. "Our obsession with certain Engineering courses, MBAs and MBBS" is insane Anyways, I will introduce him, when he gets all the scholarship results. Then you all can give him all the praise he deserves. Let's respect every field of study and not only certain Engg, MBA or MBBS. IHLs - A Key Stakeholder of BE Sector Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) play a vital role in the Built Environment (BE) sector, not only in developing talents for our industry but also in conducting cutting-edge research and development (R&D) to address the challenges we face in the sector. I recently attended the Nanyang Technological University Singapore Civil and Environmental Engineering School Advisory Committee meeting where we discussed the school's achievements and future direction. I was impressed by the school's progress and its excellent ranking in the 2024 QS World University Rankings (WUR). However, with Singapore's declining fertility rate, the talent crunch is a pressing issue as we need to compete with other sectors for talents. I shared with the commitee members, which is made up of public and private practitioners, that it is important to ensure that the standards of our graduates remain high. Compromising on standards would lead to a downward spiral, deterring top candidates from joining our BE courses and eventually the BE sector. Moreover, engineers play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of our built environment so maintaining high standards is essential. We also need to produce talents with relevant skillsets, including engineering, sustainability, digitalisation, and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) for our firms. I also highlighted that research areas should focus on the industry needs and align with the key focus areas under the Built Environment Industry Transformation Map (ITM). To ensure practical, replicable and scalable results from R&D which will eventually lead to deployable solutions, IHLs must collaborate with stakeholders across the value chain, including implementers such as consultants and builders, solution providers and regulators. While some may argue that regulations impede innovation, my view is that early engagement with regulators can help overcome regulatory hurdles and shorten the R&D gestation period. Hope that our BE stakeholders can continue to collaborate as we transform our BE sector, including in the education and R&D spaces. #talent #transformationinprogress

I'm excited to share my project, " A Feasibility Study of Upgraded Extra Activities Zone Of Pokhara University." This study evaluates the potential for enhancing extracurricular facilities to boost student engagement and well-being. Objective: Assess the feasibility of upgrading extracurricular facilities. Scope: Analyze current infrastructure, consult stakeholders, perform cost-benefit analysis, consider environmental impact, and develop an implementation plan. Key Findings: Enhanced student engagement and holistic education. Improved health and well-being. Strengthened community building. Attraction of prospective students and faculty. Proposed Solutions: Modern Sports Complex Cultural and Arts Center Green Spaces Technology Integration This study highlights the importance of investing in upgraded extracurricular zones to create a vibrant campus environment.
