As I celebrate my 3-year anniversary at Incyte, I reflect on this incredible journey of growth and collaboration with some of the brightest minds in our industry. My proudest achievement over the past three years has been building our European Inflammation & Autoimmunity (IAI) team from the ground up – finding the right talented colleagues and ensuring each new team member has become an integral part of our Incyte culture – creating a team that’s working well together in the headquarters and with the country teams, even when separated geographically. At Incyte #WeSolveOn together. This mantra is key, both to me personally and as a team. It’s guided us through the toughest challenges, reminding us to always ask ourselves ‘what's the problem we're trying to solve?’. Learning to break down any challenge in smaller parts has enabled us to focus on the task at hand and maximise our impact over time. I am proud to lead such a resilient and creative team, one that strives for solutions, and doesn’t quit. Seeing them motivate each other, continue smiling and working as a team, even when hitting a roadblock, is a testament to our strong culture. Incyte is a vibrant and diverse organisation where we are empowered to make a difference for the lives of the patients we serve. It has been a great pleasure meeting with industrial and academic partners during my business trip in Sweden this week 🇸🇪 I am grateful for their feedback and our engaging scientific discussions. Sweden is a leading life sciences nation. The global pharma AstraZeneca has a large R&D site in the Gothenburg area creating a center of know-how that spurs innovation and the pure-play dermatology category leader Galderma has an R&D site in Uppsala (city of the oldest university in the Nordic countries). According to The Swedish Drug Discovery and Development Pipeline Report 2023 (SwedenBIO) 159 R&D pharma and biotech companies are actively developing new drugs with 63% of them having projects in clinical phase I-III. They are engaged in about 500 R&D projects with a stronghold for oncology and neurology therapeutic areas. Interestingly, a majority of the projects that succeeded phase III in the last years are reformulations of known drugs into new innovative formulations, leading to different administration routes or creating different modes of release into the body. While the majority of companies developing injectables are focusing on small molecules (e.g. Nanexa AB and Affibody AB), some are also working on formulations for biomolecules (e.g. Camurus). Last but not least, Sweden is also home of the internationally recognized Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital which are the centers of two strong life science clusters in the Stockholm area. The uniqueness of the Swedish teacher's exemption (the academic researchers rather than the university own the intellectual property of their inventions) encourages researchers to start businesses and boosts the start-up community. Last week, our Gynecological Science Symposium brought together these passionate professionals, and it was an absolute success! 💪🌟 Here are a few key factors that contributed to the program's triumph: 1️⃣ Collaborative Planning: To ensure diverse perspectives and expertise, we formed a program committee consisting of renowned gynecologists, researchers, and industry experts. Their combined wealth of knowledge and varied insights made the program well-rounded and highly informative. 2️⃣ Engaging Contemporaries as Speakers: Inviting expert presenters who have made significant contributions in their respective areas is crucial. Our selection process involved extensive research, considering both scientific impact and effective communication skills. 🎉 Today marks a significant milestone in my journey – 5 years with Hoffmann-La Roche. Reflecting on this period, I feel immense gratitude for the enriching experiences and the incredible people I've had the privilege to work alongside. At Roche, the fusion of stimulating science and a nurturing work environment has been a constant source of inspiration. My involvement in Ophthalmology, spanning across Medical Affairs, Ophthalmic Precision Medicine, Personalized Healthcare, and Early Research and Development, has been a profound learning experience. Additionally, having the opportunity to contribute to advancing AI in medicine has been both a challenge and a delight. This endeavor, particularly in the context of ophthalmology, has not only been a testament to the company's innovative spirit but also a wonderful learning opportunity for me. The company's innovative approach and its remarkable Ophthalmology portfolio stand as a testament to its commitment to excellence in healthcare. I am confident anyone affiliated with medicine has read that Boston Scientific is set to acquire Axonics, Inc., a trailblazer in medical technology for treating urinary and bowel dysfunction. This acquisition, valued at a robust $3.7 billion, marks a significant expansion of Boston Scientific's urology portfolio, offering innovative solutions for patients grappling with overactive bladder and fecal incontinence. The move is poised to redefine the industry landscape, bolstering Boston Scientific's capacity to support urologists and patients facing chronic conditions. It also propels the company into the dynamic field of sacral neuromodulation, broadening patient access to essential care. From personal experience, having been part of Pfizer's expansion into management in 2004 and later experiencing a restructuring layoff in 2008, I understand the dual facets of such corporate maneuvers. Our recent session at Ophthalmology Tech Forum, "The Legacy Continues - Innovations at AbbVie," featured an in-depth exploration of AbbVie's ongoing commitment to eye care innovation, with Ramin Valian Ramin Valian and Nicole Fram, MD. Ramin Valian highlighted AbbVie's deep-rooted dedication to eye care, emphasizing their unique approach of maintaining long-term relationships with startups beyond initial opportunities. He explained that AbbVie’s success hinges on continuous innovation, actively engaging in research from early discovery through product development. This approach allows AbbVie to stay ahead in the industry, learning from both their achievements and setbacks to drive futuristic technologies forward. Nicole shared insights on the acquisition journey and AbbVie's mentorship of companies not yet ready for the market. But the article on deaf children took me on a tangent. 🤔 60% is genetic 🤔 an innovative approach for treatment 🤔 positive and promising results But it is the vector - the process - that fascinates me this morning. I’ve heard of gene therapy, but didn’t realize “how” it was done. Designing and injecting a virus to deliver the therapy. Blew my mind. A “hollowed our virus” was injected into the children to introduce the therapy. Just - wow. The teams I work with set strategy and design programs and policies to get a positive result for our customers and our business. I usually don’t spend much time on the details. (That’s a story for another day). But this story really drove home how the details can be fascinating and engaging behind a positive result. I learned something today. 💡 Boston Scientific to Acquire Axonics, Inc. For About $3.7 Billion ☑ The deal marks Boston Scientific's entry into sacral neuromodulation, a minimally invasive procedure used in the treatment of overactive bladder and fecal incontinence, and is the latest in efforts to scale up its urology business. ☑ Axonics, Inc.' products, such as Axonics R20 and Axonics F15, are used to deliver sacral neuromodulation therapy, which works by delivering mild electrical pulses to the sacral nerve to restore communication between the brain and the bladder. The California-based company's portfolio includes Bulkamid, a minimally invasive treatment for urinary incontinence in women. ☑ Massachusetts-based Boston Scientific has been on an acquisition spree.
