Arrell Food Institute is pleased to shine a light on the Net-Zero Food Systems Challenge (NZFSC), run by AFI and the Ontario Agricultural College and financially supported by Loblaw Companies Limited. The NZFSC is an experiential learning program that brings together graduate students to develop solutions for a net-zero food system. The purpose of the program is to develop the skills of emerging food leaders who are interested in sustainable practices and food systems. Over six months, graduate students across Canada alongside thought leaders and industry decision-makers collaboratively developed solutions for sustainable agriculture and food systems. These students conducted independent research, synthesized academic and industry reports, and compared sustainability practices and commitments of food retailers in Canada and internationally. Great to speak to the Emergent Generation (https://lnkd.in/eAui_DdN), asking the question what can your council do for food? Highlighted the potential for dynamic procurement to offer opportunities for small and medium-sized growers to access local authority food procurement. Discussed action being taken by Combined Authorities to improve local food systems from free school meals to unhealthy food advertising, as well as the work of local food partnerships. Also noted the unique position of food within the latest North East Combined Authority devolution deal including the pledge to “create a regional food covenant or charter to help boost local production” and the ambition to “deliver an agri-food and drink event in the region in 2024/25 to showcase innovation, scale, and growth potential of industry in the region.”

Among the myriad of professional events I've had the privilege to attend, the Food for Climate League (FCL) gathering, hosted by Good Chaos and Builders Initiative, stands out as a pivotal moment. FCL is an organization that promotes sustainable food systems. I had the pleasure of meeting some incredible women, including Renee Guilbault, Natalie Mindrum, Naomi Sachs, Ilana Braverman, Jessy Grossman, and other food innovators, activists, and philanthropists - all united in their passion for evolving the sustainability of our food systems. If you aren't already familiar, one fascinating study from FCL, in partnership with Better Food Foundation and Greener by Default, was conducted to encourage university students to eat more plant-based dishes. The study made plant-based dishes the default option in a select set of Sodexo-run campus cafeterias. The findings revealed that students were more likely to choose plant-based meals when they were the default option, even when meat and dairy-based meals were also available. Many know that plant-based foods have lower greenhouse gas intensities than animal-based foods. Still, I would not have realized how much of a difference swapping the default dish alone would make. The trial resulted in a 23.6% reduction in food-related greenhouse gas emissions on days when a plant-based dish was served as the default option. This raises an important question: Whyyyy do we almost always make the less sustainable meal option the default option? If you aren't familiar with the Food for Climate League, you should absolutely check it out. FCL works to make climate-smart eating the norm and offers many free toolkits and resources to that end. Happy to share our paper which emphasizes the important role of diversity in mixed Indigenous food system networks. Importantly, diversity is not just a proxy for resilience but reflects deeper values around community cohesion and traditional practices. We applied the Shannon Diversity Index to measure the diversity of this food system network. We showed how key challenges like out-migration and knowledge loss undermine food system diversity and which interventions show promise in increasing food system diversity. A key takeaway is that interventions should focus on increasing the richness and abundance of interactions in order to strengthen Indigenous food system diversity.
