🔗 Driving the Implementation of the EU Critical Raw Materials Act at Raw Materials Week 2024 🧩The EU Raw Materials Week (9-13 December 2024, Brussels) is a cornerstone event for shaping the future of Europe’s critical raw materials strategy. As a vital platform for collaboration among industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders, it plays a crucial role in advancing the implementation of the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). 🎯The CRMA sets ambitious benchmarks for 2030: extracting at least 10%, processing 40%, and recycling 15% of the EU’s annual consumption of strategic raw materials. Additionally, it aims to ensure that no more than 65% of the Union’s annual consumption of each strategic raw material comes from a single third country, thereby reducing dependency and enhancing supply chain resilience. This week-long gathering is a driving force behind fostering sustainable supply chains, enhancing resilience, and reinforcing global partnerships. 📌 Representing both TETHYS: Trans-Eurasian Gateway and the EIT RawMaterials Inter-Regional Center, I am deeply engaged in discussions to support Europe’s green and digital transitions. Together, we will strengthen initiatives that ensure a sustainable, secure, and competitive raw materials ecosystem, aligning with Europe’s strategic objectives. 📣 Raw Materials Week 2024 is a call to action! Looking forward to reconnecting with colleagues and friends and establishing new collaborations to shape the future of critical raw materials together! ➡️ See the Agenda: https://lnkd.in/dHgjw94x #RawMaterialsWeek2024 #CriticalRawMaterials #EUCRMA #Sustainability #GreenTransition #DigitalTransition #CircularEconomy #Innovation #RawMaterialsStrategy #SupplyChainResilience #EITRawMaterials #CriticalMinerals #Collaboration #SustainableFuture

The Raw Materials Week 2024 perfectly aligns with our mission at Eurobattery Minerals AB to make Europe self-sufficient in responsibly mined battery minerals. Through innovation, collaboration, and sustainability-focused strategies, we aim to power a cleaner, greener world. As the global demand for electric vehicles and sustainable energy solutions grows, securing ethically sourced nickel, cobalt, and copper is essential. The EU wants to set the global standard for responsible sourcing and also show that Europe means business when it comes to raw materials. The CRMA came into force in May this year, now Europe needs to move from words to action. I personally see two issues: financing and the permitting process. To reach our goals in Europe, the mining companies need access to financing, and much simpler and shorter procedures to obtain permits. And we heard this same argument from many of the speakers at Raw Materials Week this year. CRMA is good but the proof of the pudding is in the eating… #RawMaterialsWeek2024 #EurobatteryMinerals #ResponsibleMining FinnCobalt Oy Ilari Kinnunen Kalle Penttilä

Critical Minerals Are in Demand. How Do We Make Sure This Trend Drives Development? The soaring demand for critical raw materials, driven by the clean energy transition, presents significant opportunities for green industrialization, especially in developing countries. Many countries are engaging in state-to-state partnerships to bridge the potential supply-demand gap in critical raw materials but these arrangements must be structured to attract investments while integrating sustainability standards, KIMBERLEY BOTWRIGHT and GUILLAUME DABRÉ write. Several thought leaders provide their perspectives on trade, critical minerals and sustainability, as a new white paper from the World Economic Forum unpacks how trade deals can ensure developing countries benefit from demand for their critical material resources.

I am delighted to share a new SOMO long read, with Alejandro Gonzalez: The EU's Critical Mineral Crusade. On how the EU is using its trade policy to secure and control access to critical mineral for its green transition, and the implications for mineral resource governance in the Global South. Particularly, it reveals how EU free trade agreements set out to facilitate trade and investment in energy and raw materials, thereby driving up resource extraction, while affecting governments' abilities to leverage their mineral wealth through downstream and value addition strategies. Read the long read here: https://lnkd.in/eCij_KDG And join our roundtable on trade policy and critical minerals during the upcoming OECD Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains: https://lnkd.in/dCGFjYHr #Trade #CriticalMinerals #SupplyChains #RawMaterials #Nickel #Lithium #EV #Decarbonization #Overconsumption #JustTransition

Monday 9th update; if you are interested in a coffee or chat during the European Raw Materials Week; PM or email me at bard@bergfald.no. European Raw Materials Week will gather experts and policymakers from all over in Brussels next week. I'm honoured to be invited to present recycling of Critical Raw Materials (CRM) in the Nordic Countries. CRMs are the metals needed for defence, independence, electrification and sustainability. Today, Europe is dependent on import, but new policies all over Europe are fast developing to increase mining, processing and recycling. Both mining and recycling needs to step up the game, if we are to gain independence. One million ton of CRMs are landfilled and lost in the Nordics every year, but new industries are now built to process some of it. More of that is needed and new industries generating billions from waste is possible. Looking forward to a productive week in Brussels!

Anytime and anywhere: Panel Discussion on Industry Standards for Production, Processing and Traceability of Sustainable Raw Materials Sustainable raw materials are a key ingredient in implementing the renewable energy transition, and #MiningForum has chosen “For a sustainable Future” as its motto for this year´s 17th edition. In 2023, the G7/G20 nations have concluded on harmonized ESG criteria for sustainable raw materials, and the EU Critical Raw Materials Act has translated these harmonized ESG criteria into EU Principles for Sustainable Raw Materials. The new standard development ISO PC 348 Sustainable Raw Materials is the first globally relevant standard to implement these harmonized ESG criteria. That is why defining and even more so embedding sustainable #IndustryStandards in the mining sector is of crucial importance. Having a common minimum baseline helps to gain global acceptance and maintain the trust of business partners, politics, civil society, and other vital stakeholders. In mining, globalization, geopolitical factors and at times the global supply chains complicate ensuring compliance with industry standards. Certifying compliance is an ever more difficult task. And yet, this complexity further increases the demand for certification so that customers can be sure that the raw materials were obtained in line with sustainability and industry standards. So how can certificates support, trace, and monitor the compliance with standards? What are some of the challenges enterprises face when trying to enforce industry standards along their supply chains? Dr. Michael Haschke from DMT GROUP will host the panel discussion at MiningForum, welcoming on stage renowned experts Maria Nyberg from the European Commission, Dario Liguti from United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Prof. Dr. Peter Goerke-Mallet, Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola, Cäcilie Le Gallic from OECD - OCDE, and Julia Listringhaus, DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung e. V. Please join us for an exciting discussion and new perspectives: 🗓️ Date: 07.06.2024 ⏰ Time: 9.00h 📍 Location: Estrel Berlin, Room D For the full agenda of the two-day conference, have a look here: Agenda | MiningForum (the-miningforum.com) Tickets are available on our website: Registration | MiningForum (the-miningforum.com) See you in Berlin and Glückauf! #MiningForum #Sustainability #Traceability #Supplychain #rawmaterials
