#Aboutlastweekend, this is my favorite photo from our morning cleanup, Saturday, April 27, on the Ribault River. Capt. Sam Baker of Sol Margin Fishing & Conservation Foundation had just assisted a youth in catching this fish. I'm not an angler but he called it "a red." Our family from South Carolina said it looked like a spot. I don't know what its name, but before my plant-based lifestyle I called it good food. The look on the Captain's face reminds me of hearing a youngster say, "I did it!" I imagine that's the sentiment every time you have waited expectantly on fish to bite your hook and then, suddenly, it does! Capt. Baker loves nature. He loves fishing, loves the environment, and he loves teaching others about what he loves. Now he has a band of supporters, including us at the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Community Trust, Inc., who want to help him help the community sustain our culture by returning the river to a healthy state. He and Kristopher Smith of the #RibaultSportsmenAssociation, working with the St. Johns Riverkeeper and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Jacksonville, know that a #resilientribault means a #resilientcommunity of #GullahGeechee people who can maintain their #culture through #subsistencefishing and passing down #fishingtraditions to the next generation. #Environmentalconservation is #culturalconservation. Intervening in the #climatecrisis includes providing tools that communities in its path can use to become #sustainable. I'm looking forward to helping Gullah/Geechee people maintain our culture, despite the odds. When the right opportunities bite, we'll reel them in and then we can say, "We did it!" Week 89 of Street Cleanup! For the last 89 weeks I have been picking up trash in my neighborhood. It first started as wanting to beautify in front of my house and has expanded to a weekly ritual. I have shared a picture of the cleanup every week on my neighborhood Facebook page and it has turned into a community project. The story has been picked up by several news outlets. While I am excited to hit week 100, I don’t have plans to stop. Here is what I have learned so far: 1. No one's in charge of improving the environment. That means you're in charge. 2. There's enough pessimism about the climate from people who aren't doing anything to improve it. You can be a beacon for the doers. 3. Pick a small project, 30 minutes or less, that you can return to weekly. Make sustainability sustainable. 4. Share what you're doing to make a bigger impact. Social media helps. 5. Doing something to improve the environment will give you peace of mind. 6. The glamorous jobs have enough people clamoring to do them. Get your hands dirty. 7. Most litter here is alcohol, lottery tickets, candy, tobacco, and fast food. 8. You find out who your real friends are when they come pick up trash off the street with you.

🎉Innovate UK award winner. Proud founder of trundl, the walking app: The inspiring, cost-effective way to promote wellbeing, support UK charities, and track your company's social and environmental impact.
Can taking a walk really can kelp the environment? You’ll have to excuse the pun I’m afraid, I stole it from our recent blog as it was too good an opportunity to miss! 😅 If you’re one of our lovely trundl users , you’ll know that we’ve been walking for the Sussex Wildlife Trust, who have recently announced that they’re using kelp in the battle against our ever increasing carbon footprint. Now, you might not know a lot about this incredible plant or how it plays a part in protecting our coastline and I must admit, I didn’t either! So - here’s a few brilliant facts that I’d like to share with you to help you get better acquainted with the slimy saviour! 🌊 One kelp can support up to 80,000 individual animals, creating a multi-dimensional habitat 🌊 The plants create a physical buffer to absorb the impact of passing waves and storm surges 🌊 It acts as a carbon conveyer, meaning that it draws down carbon faster than many land plants do 🌊 More kelp = more wildlife = more opportunities for marine education and sustainable forms of business and tourism Isn’t that fantastic?! You might have heard on the news that the UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world (as reported by WWF), so now more than ever, we really need to get behind the projects that will turn the tide (sorry, it had to be done) on the impact we’re having on our British wildlife. Whilst the Kelp Recovery Project in Sussex is still in its early stages, plants are beginning to re-establish themselves…in their own time! The charity isn’t actually planting new kelp forests themselves, but rather letting nature take its course and doing what they can to keep the area protected. So what can you do about it? You might be interested to learn that our walking for charity app has a CO2 saver built in. So every time you decide to leave the car at home and walk, you can track the impact you’re having on saving CO2. For every 500kg of CO2 we save, we help a fantastic organisation called The Tree Council plant a school orchard including fruiting trees and a hedgerow and improve the education and access to nature we need to give to the next generation. We’re hoping that over time, this and the work of the Kelp Recovery Project, will help improve our chances of being a bit kinder to this incredible planet. If you want to find out about this amazing work, then please do take a look at their content https://lnkd.in/e7nBSyXw. OR let us know if you or your business would like to get involved in trundling for good and one of our CO2 saving projects. It’s a walk, but better. #ESG #CSR #WalkingForHealth

Study Shows Distinguishing Illegal Dumping from Encampment Trash Difficult Preliminary findings from Dr. Costanza Rampini's research at San Jose State University shed new light on the ongoing debate about trash accumulation along creeksides. Contrary to popular belief, garbage found in these areas may not come from homeless encampments to the degree once thought. Instead, Rampini’s research points to a higher level of illegal dumping—often construction debris and other bulk waste that would not be possible solely from homeless encampments. In fact, illegal dumping may be taking place intentionally adjacent to encampments, although the mechanisms for this remain unknown. In areas where encampments were provided with nearby trash management services, such as dumpsters and regular pickup, residents used them responsibly. This finding highlights that when unhoused individuals are given access to basic services, they are willing to contribute to keeping the environment clean. SOS regularly picks encampment trash left at curbsides across Richmond for the Streets Team to pick up. Rampini’s work challenges the misconception that encampments are the primary source of trash along creeksides. While homeless communities often bear the brunt of public criticism, these findings reveal a major issue with individuals and businesses engaging in illegal dumping. The study brings forth the importance of targeted enforcement of illegal waste disposal. By addressing illegal dumping and providing trash services where needed, we can take a more effective (and possibly more affordable) approach to preserving our creeks and keeping communities, housed and unhoused alike, cleaner and safer. Coastal Cleanup Day is September 21, 2024. To find a cleanup near you, go to: https://lnkd.in/eD8ncGf Don’t forget that SOS hosts two local cleanups per month. The practice of burying our dead in the ground has been traced back over 100,000 years ago. For the vast majority of that history, those burials have been green. In fact, the practice of embalming, one of the most environmentally harmful aspects of modern American burial, didn’t begin until the Civil War — in an effort to preserve the bodies of soldiers killed far from home so they could be returned to their families intact. An exciting update from the new Victoria handyDART Centre in View Royal 🐟 Two years into restoring the stream channel connected to Craigflower Creek, and it's teeming with cutthroat trout and coho salmon! Our environmental monitor, local streamkeepers and the Neighborhood Working Group conducted their annual fish count last month and discovered 29 fat, happy fish and trout spawning nests aka "redds" ✨ Scales were collected to analyze more details about the new inhabitants, like their age and growth rate. This warm, slow-moving stream is now a top winter destination for trout and salmon, and especially so with the discovery of nests which signal a bright future for the stream's health/fish stocks! We're thrilled that the first Salmon-Safe certified development site on Vancouver Island is making leaps and bounds as a thriving habitat in the Craigflower Creek Watershed 💚 #BCTransit #handyDART #Transit #TransitFan #BusLife #YYJ #VictoriaBC #ViewRoyal #SalmonSafe #FishyBusiness #HealthyStreams #Sustainability
