How can increased investment possibly occur as hospitals are often operating with little to no profit margin, among other financial challenges? Where can hospitals find funding to elevate community health when they often cannot cover operating costs? There is an increasing source of revenue many hospitals are capitalizing on for these increasing health and well-being initiatives. It is called philanthropy. Philanthropy is not a panacea to all challenges faced by hospitals and health systems. However, by harnessing the power of philanthropy, hospitals and health systems can close fair share deficits while making strategic investments in the drivers that determine our individual and collective health. Read more from Accordant's John Donovan, on ways to improve fair share deficits and community investment: https://ow.ly/OytJ50RqKOT #healthcare #philanthropy #communityhealth

Funding is, by far, the limiting factor to advance community health. There is a substantial need for philanthropy in this space. In a survey conducted by ReThink Health, 82% state that, “Not enough funding for our services, programs or policies,” is a barrier contributing to equitable community well-being.* To meet the financial challenge faced by health care organizations, health care foundations are leaning in and incorporating health equity in their philanthropic case for support. For many organizations, designing a health equity case requires a fresh approach beyond the traditional capital and/or specialty care projects. Charitable giving presents a significant mission opportunity. Charitable giving in the United States measured $499.33 billion in 2022.* While giving at this level indicates extraordinary generosity to charitable causes, this represents a 3.4% decrease in current dollars and a 10.5% decrease in inflation-adjusted dollars over the prior year; a reality largely attributed to challenging economic conditions including historic inflation, stock market volatility and decreased consumer discretionary income.* However, dollars given to health causes—including not only hospitals and health systems but also health research and advocacy organizations—enjoyed a year-over-year increase of 5.1% which equates to 10% of total U.S. giving or $51.8 billion.* Health organizations also have a rising opportunity to secure a larger piece of the giving pie as they increasingly reach beyond hospital walls to address social drivers of health and health equity, which creates opportunities to tap into dollars given to human services ($71.98 billion) and public-society benefit ($46.86 billion).* Check out the full piece by Accordant CEO Betsy Chapin Taylor, FAHP, on the financial rationale for health philanthropy this year: https://ow.ly/iAuz50RE8vA *Giving USA 2023: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2022 (2023) #healthcare #philanthropy

Thanks Nadine for these words and insight into our relational language. What if we could be in right relationship between doing to, for, with and by? To= everything done, is to us & without us. (Medical Model) For= everything done, is done for us; without us. (Charity Model) With= nothing for us without us. (Social Model/Coproduction/Co-design, Asset-based approaches) By= done by us for us. (Asset-based Community Development) (From Nurture Development)
Supporting Teams in Healthcare to Thrive | Certified Coach and Process Nerd | Empathy + Evidence Informed Approach to Change = Better Culture & Better Care
"This is not a training course - we are here to plot a revolution" is not something I've ever heard at a workshop before - but what if we did start from 'what's strong' instead of 'what's wrong?' What if we could 'care to listen' instead of jumping into to try and fix, advise, rescue? What if we could be in right relationship between doing to, for, with and by? To= everything done, is to us & without us. (Medical Model) For= everything done, is done for us; without us. (Charity Model) With= nothing for us without us. (Social Model/Coproduction/Co-design, Asset-based approaches) By= done by us for us. (Asset-based Community Development) (From Nurture Development) I spent most of last week in an amazingly transformative training experience guided by Cormac Russell. The question of "what does a good day look like for you and what are the barriers that get in the way of you having more of them?" can apply in everything I do. There are so many practice opportunities in how I coach caregivers, care providers and care teams, in how I contribute in my community, in how I learn with people about 'being with' dying, death, grief and loss... Thank you Healthcare Excellence Canada for your vision and leadership bringing Asset-based Community Development to our thinking about Enabling Aging in Place. I'm excited by the thought of shaking things up as we explore processes and ideas that support well-being and health beyond healthcare.

"My grandson Graceson is autistic, and he has seizures. Dr. Patera has been instrumental in his health care plan. He was terrified of doctors, until he was under her care. She has formed a relationship with Graceson that no doctor was able to do. I don’t know where we would be without her or Advance Community Health." - Patricia, Pediatric Parent This is why your support of the Impact Fund matters. As we head toward Christmas, the season of giving, would you consider giving the gift of health and hope for kids like Graceson? Have you checked out Accordant's insights on the recent Giving USA: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for Year 2023? The data from this year’s report created mixed reactions. On one hand, we learned that all sources of giving in 2023 declined or remained flat when adjusted for inflation, despite $557.16 billion raised in total. On the other hand, five of the nine sub-sectors, including health ($56.58 billion), reached an all-time high even when adjusted for inflation. In a nutshell, this is what we learned: Giving dropped again—by individuals, by foundations and by corporations. Giving dropped across the board. The news is discouraging, so how do we move forward from here? Read more: https://ow.ly/SVpr50SqGXH #healthcare #philanthropy
