A new study published in The Lancet identifies vision loss and high cholesterol as two new potentially modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer's disease, adding them to a list of 12 previously known factors like physical inactivity, smoking, and high blood pressure. With nearly 7 million Americans affected by Alzheimer's and dementia, researchers emphasize the importance of early detection and prevention strategies to delay or prevent these conditions, as their prevalence is expected to rise globally. They urge policymakers to prioritize resources for risk reduction and improving the quality of life for patients with dementia and their families. As the need for innovation in cognitive care grows, next-generation digital cognitive assessments play a crucial role in enabling earlier detection and intervention in brain health, helping healthcare providers enhance routine screenings for mild cognitive impairment and develop effective, lifestyle-focused care pathways. https://lnkd.in/guTAS_rh #AlzheimersDisease #AlzheimersResearch #BrainHealth #CognitiveDecline #MildCognitiveImpairment CBS News

Discovering New Frontiers in Dementia Research: Unveiling Risk Factors for Early-Onset Alzheimer's. Recent research has identified unexpected risk factors such as social isolation and depression, as well as recognized dangers such as Vitamin D deficiency and high c-reactive protein. Addressing these modifiable factors could prevent up to 30-40% of early-onset cases, improving lives and reducing the strain on global healthcare systems. This study not only provides light on underexplored forms of dementia, but it also emphasizes the critical necessity for preventive therapies. Together, we can have a tremendous influence on families and society. ⚜️Lewy body dementia is the second most prevalent form of dementia, following Alzheimer's disease. Nerve cells in the brain develop protein deposits known as Lewy bodies. The brain regions that are involved in movement, memory, and thought are impacted by the protein deposits. This condition is also referred to as dementia with Lewy bodies. ⚜️Lewy body dementia results in a progressive deterioration of cognitive abilities. Lewy body dementia may cause individuals to perceive objects that are not present. Visual hallucinations are the term used to describe this phenomenon. Additionally, they may experience fluctuations in their attention and alertness. ⚜️People who have Lewy body dementia may experience symptoms of Parkinson's disease. These symptoms may encompass tremors, sluggish movement, rigid muscles, and difficulty walking. 🌟Vascular dementia is a general term that refers to cognitive impairments, including memory, reasoning, planning, and judgement, that are the result of impaired blood flow to the brain. 🌟Vascular dementia may arise as a result of a stroke that obstructs an artery in the brain; however, strokes do not necessarily induce vascular dementia. The extent to which a stroke impacts your thinking and reasoning is contingent upon the severity and location of the stroke. Other conditions that impair blood vessels and reduce circulation, depriving your brain of vital oxygen and nutrients, can also lead to vascular dementia. 🌟The likelihood of vascular dementia is also increased by factors that increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking. You may reduce your risk of developing vascular dementia by managing these factors.
