Daniel Pullan coined the phrase 'Hydrodynamic Dredging Method' to explain Ebsford Environmental Ltd's recent approach to this dredging project at #Leeds Dock for the Canal & River Trust. The method: ✅ Putting the silt into suspension, allowing the flow of the river to redistribute downstream. ✅Apply this to the moorings to remove sediment build up, which was lifting the moorings and stopping them from floating. ✅By pumping, we can complete the works without removing the mooring, this avoids disconnecting the utilities that runs through them.

A complex three-year project to restore a drinking water storage reservoir, and increase the efficiency of the storage of fresh, clean, drinking water, has won the Utility Week Infrastructure Delivery Award at its event last month. AtkinsRéalis and DDS Group worked with South East Water after millions of litres of water was lost when sinkholes appeared at the drinking water storage reservoir in Aylesford in 2020. It is not often that a sunken site is brought back to life, but that was the result of the work on this extraordinary project, which utilised a wide range of specialist surveys and assessments, including geophysical, laser scanning ground-level monitoring and dynamic probing, to increase understanding of what was happening underground. Of the three cells on site, one was demolished, a second repaired and a third split into two, increasing turnover and efficiency. A new, temporary, water treatment works was set up whilst the work was ongoing, while an existing above-ground raw water tank was repurposed at the same time. Winning this award is great endorsement of the work that was carried out and the collaboration that made it possible. #Water #UtilityWeek #Awards #Collaboration

The Bois d'Arc Lake Water Supply Program in Bonham, Texas by Freese and Nichols is one of ACEC’s 2024 Engineering Excellence Award winners. Facing some of the most explosive population growth in the U.S., the North Texas Municipal Water District needed a new, long-term water source added to their system to operate in concert with their smart water management and conservation efforts. The main elements include a 2-mile-long, 90-foot-tall earthen dam and 16,641-acre reservoir; a treatment plant and transmission systems that include two huge pump stations and 60 miles of pipelines for raw and treated water; and multiple sites of forested and emergent wetlands, grasslands, and stream restoration, including planting of 6.3 million trees. Junction Creek Stewardship Committee (JCSC) have launched a multi-year community action-based project aimed at mitigating stormwater pollutants in the Junction Creek watershed. They have installed LittaTrap™ catch basin insert filters in publicly accessible parking lots to capture and remove stormwater contaminants effectively. During the fall of 2022, a pilot test of the LittaTrap™ catch basin filters yielded outstanding results: 31 kg of garbage, sand, and debris were captured within just three weeks! This success led to the expansion of the project in 2023, with 34 catch basins fitted with insert filters across various areas of Greater Sudbury. In total, these filters successfully captured 4906 pieces of litter and a staggering 112 kg of litter and debris. Great work by everyone involved!
