When you work in the creative field, it’s very easy to forget the artist in you while trying to be your most productive/ambitious/professional self. Your individual art is raw, unhurried, imperfect. It’s your brand. It doesn’t comply with the organizational brand guidelines or timelines, you don’t color within the (corporate) lines. So before you lose the artist in you, do something. PROFESSIONAL HIVE MIND: I decided to count how many minimalist portraits I have done to date, and they easily number over 300, from singers and actors to historical figures and even friends. It seems to be the style where my mind and heart gravitate right now and I at least have a lot of fun doing them. A friend asked recently why I did them, or rather, if they were part of a larger project. I said, “No, not yet (always say “not yet” in life to keep the door open). I currently do them for creative enjoyment, to keep my design muscles in use, and in the case of awareness months, to raise…well, awareness. That said, I would love to see them become something physical out in the larger world. Editorial spot illustrations? A book? Album covers? Thoughts? What would you buy that had these? That is the bottom line question as a publisher, art director, etc. will only buy them they in turn compel consumers to buy them. Here is a sample of just singers I have done. Tag someone you think would love these.

I love buying art off the side of the street. Those bright colors and imaginative depictions laid out on an upturned door, or hanging from clothes pegs, or that lure you inside a tiny local gallery. I take thousands of photos (that I’ll have to deal with one day), but that little painting will go on my wall and soon come to color my memory of a place. It becomes part of the fabric of the story I tell of our journey.. Because we are the stories you tell about ourselves. The stories that are true and the ones that become true because we tell them so often. Stories become true not because of their factual accuracy, but because of how they make us behave, how they make us remember, how they make us feel about people, places and things.  They are what governs our reactions and determine our love, hurt, courage, fear & indignation. So we need to take extra care with the stories we tell out loud. Because they will become true for others too. Humans are hard-wired to tell and listen to stories. We are drawn to each other by the stories we tell. If you have a stage or an opportunity to tell your story, what are the truths that are important for you to share? 4 Questions on the Creative Process with Artist Jeri Lewis Edwards Autumn is a time of transition as summer’s abundance gives way to the sparseness of fall. It offers the opportunity both to reflect, and to look forward, presenting a compelling reminder of impermanence, that we — and our surroundings — are constantly developing. Perfectly fitting, #sparkchamber is thrilled to welcome artist Jeri Lewis Edwards. From love of nature, to openness to new influences — or seeing “old” influences from a new perspective — Jeri’s story emphasizes how vital it is to embrace the present moment. In her own words: “I’m a naturalist, wildlife advocate — especially when it comes to advocating preservation of habitat — a published poet, and a mixed-media artist. I know it sounds cliche, but like so many of my fellow artists, I’ve always wanted to be an artist. But without any nurturing I put that dream aside. “And after getting a degree in marketing, I developed my own recruiting consulting. For 33 years I partnered with founders and CEOs to help them build their entrepreneurially-spirited executive team. I have to say that I was quite good at “match making,” and now that intuitive voice inside me is still quite alive as I spend time in my art studio. “I grew up spending time in the woods, and as I got older I found I couldn’t be away from being outside all the time. So I began to backpack all throughout the wilderness areas of the U.S., as well as biking along back roads. Today my favorite activities continue to be hiking, biking, and kayaking. “Years ago, I put a pair of binoculars in my hand and that completely changed my world! I realized that all throughout my life seeing wildlife was the highlight of a day for me. And viewing birds through my binoculars or a scope is a daily highlight! Being able to identify birds around me by their sounds is an added enrichment. Whether it’s seeing and hearing birds, identifying new plants, mushrooms, or insects, all of these contribute to heightening my sense of listening and of the wonder of nature.
