Meaningful change is possible from Lloyd's, but its wider actions must meet its noble claims. On many levels, this is a good effort - particularly on addressing deep set concerns about their former role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade in their latest push to diversify the market. However, Lloyd’s and partners involved in this new initiative must evaluate their role in exacerbating inequities by insuring fossil fuels that pollute Black and ethnically diverse people. We cannot ignore the fact that several of the major backers of Inclusive Futures (Lloyd's, Chubb, MS Amlin and Tokio Marine Kiln) are yet to rule out the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), which poses extreme risks to the livelihoods, food systems and the water supply of local Ugandan and Tanzanian communities and beyond. If there is a greater concern for Black and ethnically diverse people, then ruling out projects which significantly harm these communities globally is paramount to make these recruitment efforts truly meaningful. If this is not done so, it would only be a continuation of Lloyd’s involvement in extractivism and Neo-colonialism - as recently exemplified by the alarming violence targeting Ugandan activists (see below). https://lnkd.in/gPTZsFy6 #StopEACOP

I’m sure I wasn’t the only one to have a visceral reaction to Bloomberg’s recent headline, “Wall Street’s DEI Retreat Has Officially Begun.” (If you missed the story, a link is in comments below.) But a week earlier I’d been reminded at a Fireside Chat among Alphonso David, Jean Lam MacInnes and Todd Sears, that DEI and ESG are “trains that have left the station.” More companies than not, are NOT backing away from their commitment to a diverse workforce and board that reflect the clients and customers they serve. In other words, representing the true make up of our current population. For those companies, DEI does means Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the workplace. And does not stand for Disunite Everybody Impulsively. I wouldn't typically think of lawyers as impulsive, but when their advice to “tweak” DEI initiatives and language is being driven by anti-DEI billionaire crusaders, how are they acting in the best long-term interest of their clients’ mission and desired business outcomes? Wise words from Alphonso David: Policies should never be created based on fear; they should be driven by facts. And there is a clear business case for diversity and inclusion based on facts, including innovation and an improved bottom line. And as Jean Lam MacInnes put it: There is no one better to confront DEI backlash than the diverse populations that have been dealing with it their whole lives. The 'S' in ESG. I witness thousands of companies going bankrupt daily, and this isn't solely due to poor management but undeniably a matter of perspective. Worldview is something that only those who have lived or experienced certain situations can truly grasp. Others, who are genuinely willing to comprehend how the other side of the paradise they live in operates, can gain insight. Few take heed of what transpires outside their comfort zones, and this is a glaring shortcoming. It's essential because the majority of the world's population comprises the poor, physically or mentally disabled, and Black individuals. The fact remains that these neglected groups are consumers as well. They dine, purchase, slumber in beds, watch TV or series, outings, seek comfort, nurture ambitions, undertake new business ventures regularly, and sell. While many companies espouse an inclusive and diverse culture in practice, it often remains only in theory. How many Black individuals hold executive positions? How many disabled individuals? Affirmative action positions are scarce, and, more often than not, they pertain to undervalued roles. Society typically does not accord minorities the credibility they deserve. However, the examples of Oprah, Mandela, Stephen Hawking, Beethoven, Dandara, and numerous others demonstrate that remarkable accomplishments can be achieved despite prejudice and limitations. Focusing solely on profitability without a keen eye on the broader perspective is futile. Strong roots are needed to underpin the growth.
