According to AIR SERVICE ONE analysis of Cirium airline schedules data for March to October 2024, airlines have already announced plans to launch well over 600 new routes involving European airports. Leading the way with well over 100 is, no surprise, Ryanair - Europe's Favourite Airline. Then comes easyJet, Volotea, Norwegian and Jet2.com and Jet2holidays all with at least 30 new routes planned. But where is Wizz Air? The last three years (2021-2023) has seen the carrier launch more new European routes than any other carrier except Ryanair. Are we about to get a batch of new route launch press releases from Wizz Air, or is this a year of consolidation for the airline?

Are low-cost airlines global? How have they harnessed ancillary revenues? What is the future of the #LCC model? John Grant's recent OAG blog, Low-Cost Carriers in the Aviation Industry- Where Next - is a deep dive into the evolving growth of LCCs. The concept was developed in the USA with Herb Kelleher, budget fares, and Southwest Airlines, and was adopted in Europe, where Ryanair - Europe's Favourite Airline flipped from trading as a regional airline to a low-cost airline, and in #Asia, musical entrepreneur Tony Fernandes created AirAsia with two senior B737s to launch his LCC. Today four of the largest ten airlines in the world are LCCs Southwest Airlines Ryanair - Europe's Favourite Airline IndiGo (InterGlobe Aviation Ltd) easyJet. But with some LCCs developing commercial partnerships with legacy airlines - what does the future look like for these popular transport models? https://lnkd.in/eUtCVmTW

Night flights are an essential element of Transavia's low-cost model, enabling it to offer attractive prices. A ban on night flights at Amsterdam Schiphol would have serious consequences on the execution of its flight schedule and therefore on its offer to customers. On Sunday 19-May-2024 British Airways (BA) flew scheduled services from London Stansted Airport for the first time since before the COVID-19 crisis. A departure to Florence was followed on the same day by flights to Nice and Ibiza. All three services are operated by BA CityFlyer on 98-seat Embraer E190 regional jets, with business class and economy cabins. From Sep-2024 BA will add a Saturday service from London Stansted to the Croatian coastal town of Split. BA's seat share at London Stansted is tiny, and it cannot expect to compete on price with the low cost airlines (especially Ryanair), which dominate the airport. However, BA is the leading airline by total seats between London and Europe. In restarting scheduled services from London Stansted, BA is segmenting the London-Europe market and giving more choice to its passengers. CAPA - Centre for Aviation https://lnkd.in/eB8eBY3d

Wizz Air has launched four new routes this week from its Milan Malpensa base, further consolidating its position as the third biggest carrier at the airport behind easyJet and Ryanair according to AIR SERVICE ONE analysis of Cirium schedules data. The airport is one of a handful where each of Europe's three biggest (U)LCCs has at least 10% of seat capacity. For the last 15 years the one constant at the airport has been that easyJet has been the biggest carrier. In 2024 Malpensa is the UK carrier's third busiest base after London Gatwick and Genève Aéroport. However, the honour of being Malpensa's second busiest airline (by seats) has varied over the years. Back in 2010 it was Lufthansa with its Lufthansa Italia subsidiary. Maybe surprisingly, Emirates has been number two in Malpensa, while Ryanair currently holds that distinction. Pre-pandemic in 2019, the top four carriers were easyJet, Ryanair, Air Italy and Alitalia Società Aerea Italiana S.p.A.. In 2024, behind the three major (U)LCCs, the leading carriers at Malpensa (by seats) are Neos SpA, Vueling Airlines and Emirates.

It's not an understatement to say that #Albania has been off the radar for many years, ranking 33rd place amongst European markets in 2010, but has risen to 26th place this year - and with this comes the LCCs, who currently account for 80% share the market. With Ryanair - Europe's Favourite Airline, having some 1.2m seats on sale in 2024 (from just over 100,000 in 2023), Wizz Air chasing similar numbers, and just Tirana International Airport and Kukes International Airport to accommodate growing numbers of visitors, there would seem to be plenty of opportunity for new developments to spring up. It's clear that something exciting is happening in the area, and we look forward to sharing developments over the next few months. Talk to John Grant or Deirdre Fulton from MIDAS Aviation about market analysis, traffic forecasting, air service development, and delivery. https://lnkd.in/eKBEdj64

PLAY airlines is making a radical change to its business model, focusing on the strong leisure markets from Iceland and reducing flights between North America and Europe, which it considers "unprofitable and disappointing". To do so, it has also applied for an AOC from #Malta, the AOC from #Norway will continue to be used. ▶️ https://lnkd.in/d8dVaKMV Einar Örn Ólafsson #PLAYAirlines #airlines #aviation #wetravelbiz Wetravel.biz #wetravelaviation Wetravelaviation
