Policing: My forthcoming non-fiction book includes 31 policing recommendations. The final one is about continuing to have courageous conversations, such as those held recently about the impossible drain on Officer time in dealing with mental health calls. Is there not a similar conversation to be had regarding some illegal drugs and how best to overcome their dominance in fueling local and national crime, promoting human misery, and making terrible people rich by exploiting others? Given the pros and cons of legalised alcohol availability, isn't it time to explore the pros and cons regarding some drugs? Can our communities truly be safe until such courageous conversations take place? Are we afraid of the topic and its possible consequences? Transforming Community Supervision In a previous post I wrote about new advances in the training of probation officers in evidence-based practices (January 2023). My review was published in the Journal of Offender Rehabilitation (2023, Vol. 62, Issue 1). Part of the review was based on a more extensive paper that has been published by Public Safety Canada. The American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) has recently established National Standards for Community Supervision as a resource to provide guidance at every level. This includes using validated risk and needs assessments and tailoring supervision strategies to individual needs.   - Collaboration and Training: Effective community supervision requires collaboration with courts, local organizations, and treatment providers. Comprehensive training and skill development for staff, along with performance feedback and coaching, are essential.   - Individualized Supervision: Supervision terms and conditions should be reasonable and tailored to the individual. Inspectors Commend Leeds City’s Response to Serious #YouthViolenceandCriminalExploitation. #LeedsCityCouncil and its partners have received high praise from inspectors for their efforts in addressing serious #youthviolenceandcriminalexploitation. The findings from a ‘#JointTargetedAreaInspection’ (#JTAI) conducted by #Ofsted, the #CareQualityCommission (#CQC), #HMInspectorateofConstabularyandFire and #RescueServices (#HMICFRS), and #HMInspectorateofProbation, were published. The report commended the ‘effective and well-coordinated’ response of the city’s agencies in tackling these issues. The three-week inspection, which concluded in March, examined how #LeedsCityCouncil collaborates with partners such as #WestYorkshirePolice, the #WestYorkshireViolenceReductionPartnership (#VRP), schools, youth offending teams, and relevant health services. The Washington Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) acknowledges the vital role played by community supervision staff in our state. These dedicated individuals work tirelessly to address the challenges in their field. As we observe Pretrial, Probation, and Parole Supervision (PPPS) week, we encourage a deeper understanding of the growing field of Pretrial Justice and the far-reaching impact of pretrial decisions. We are dedicated to raising awareness by collaborating with and showcasing the efforts of pretrial practitioners in our state who are actively seeking community-based solutions for low-risk defendants. One such initiative includes pretrial diversion programs under the Washington State Health Care Authority, with focus on diverting individuals with mental health and or substance use concerns, providing them the opportunity to address these concerns in community rather than being held in custody. The 2024 theme, Wellness Unveiled: Navigating the Journey, serves as a reminder of the demanding and invaluable work carried out by supervision staff. This underscores the importance of prioritizing self-care and healing for these individuals. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 2023 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐁𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞 Extern's Bail Supervision Scheme (BSS) stands as an alternative for courts considering detention for young individuals, providing a chance for bail with intensive supervision. 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬: By offering an alternative to remand places, the BSS redirects focus towards bolstering community resources. This prevents youth detention and steers individuals away from further criminal involvement. 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐲 (𝐌𝐒𝐓): The BSS centres around Multisystemic Therapy (MST), an evidence-based family-focused intervention introduced by Extern in 2001. MST reshapes young individuals' behaviour within their natural environments (home, school, community), fostering positive social conduct and curbing anti-social behaviour. 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞-𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: MST therapists work intensively with four to six families, typically over three to five months, in home-based settings. This tailored approach enables in-depth support and intervention within the family unit. 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: Building upon the success of the Janus Justice Programme, the BSS integrates a new strand catering to young individuals residing in various setups, including residential care or supported accommodation. This extension ensures tailored support for youths in diverse living circumstances. 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡: The BSS not only offers alternatives to detention but also strives to create a supportive, rehabilitative environment for young individuals, emphasising proactive interventions and fostering positive behavioural changes. This is some interesting research and I am reflecting on the potential benefits of a more embedded trauma informed approach in policing. There is lots of great work being done in supporting those impacted by trauma though their work, but what if all areas of business had more trauma awareness. Everything from recruitment, HR, management and resourcing. The findings come as a police officer has been forced to leave her job due to the trauma of attending a crime where she and her colleague were attacked with a knife. NHS workers are enduring the largest number of violent incidents, suffering around 31 attacks per day in hospitals and health centres.
