As Executive Director for Metropolitan Center for Independent Living, it is my honor to share with you a co-cover article I was asked to write for MINNESOTA PHYSICIAN, the Nov. 2023 journal edition. It is entitled "A Crisis in Home Health Direct Care - The Minnesota Solutions Model." Across the United States and in Minnesota, we are experiencing an urgent severe crisis in direct care Personal Care Assistant/Direct Support Professional services. This crisis is becoming the #1 civil rights issue for people with disabilities and older adults who rely upon direct care services and benefits for daily living. The article identifies the solutions as a way out of the crisis that will require The White House, Congress, the 50 states and all of us to work together. What’s your legacy? When you think about nursing we know that the discharge process begins at admission. The same is true for these little humans we raise. Everything we do from the day they are born should be to prepare them for the future when you are no longer by their side. I had the opportunity to lead my daughters 4th grade class to the Texas State Capitol today to talk with our local legislators and were met by such wonderful staff who allowed our kids to read their letters to their legislators. To prepare these students we focused on identifying something important in your life or a problem that you see related to schools or home or safety. Then students prepared not only their concerns but suggested solutions as well. Topics included: Prayer in schools, more recess time, silent for drills, school classroom furniture on wheels which can be quickly moved in an active shooter situation, and the building of highways over farm land. To say I’m proud of my daughter is an absolute understatement. She worked really hard on this assignment and her delivery was excellent. We have to prepare students to talk to legislators BEFORE they can vote so they know that they do make a difference and every vote counts. For all those in advocacy and policy I want to know what you are doing to reach your children about the legislative process. Have you taken your kids to their local legislative offices? Do they know their voice matters? Do they understand that people are making voting decisions that directly influences their experiences, livelihood, healthcare, education, etc.? #drivingchange #advocacy #studentlearning #beBRAVE

Each year, Georgetown graduate students of all backgrounds and academic disciplines develop innovative policy solutions to issues in the Washington, DC region. The tenth annual Georgetown Public Policy Challenge (PPC) is hosted by the Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy and has led to student-led engagement on a large range of policy issues across the District of Columbia, including the digital divide for at-risk students and opioid reversal medication. https://bit.ly/4awt5Lm
