It can be reassuring for asset managers as it mirrors practices from public market allocations. But while we develop strong theses around promising sectors, we also recognize the importance of leaving room for #serendipity and founder-driven innovation. For example, a strictly AI-focused fund in the early days might have missed out on NVIDIA, given their initial focus on GPUs for video games, which later became fundamental to AI development. Therefore, when talking to LPs, we emphasize a balanced approach: demonstrating sector expertise while remaining open to unexpected opportunities". Was a real pleasure sitting down with Jan Goetz, quantum physicist and co-founder and CEO of European quantum computing innovator IQM Quantum Computers, at the recent DLD Conference in Munich. The affable entrepreneur and executive talked about IQM's raison d'être, the history and future potential of quantum technology, how far along the company is in commercialising its own tech, in which fields quantum tech will be particularly impactful, and Europe's place in the world when it comes to scaling up deep tech companies (including the many challenges that come with it). Aside from trying to create a better world with IQM Quantum Computers, Goetz also discussed why he dedicates part of his personal time to help level up the European deep tech industry, by working with fellow founders who also face difficulties in scaling their businesses, and why he's agreed to become an EIC Scaling Club Council member. Over the course of my career, I've interviewed many people, and each one truly means something to me. I have to say though, this feature for DC BLOX was a culmination of many subjects that are near and dear to me. So much happened between the lines of this video that I can only scratch the surface. For instance, the greenhouse featured is actually a smart building with a unique set of controls, and as a hobby-farmer (ahem, prepper) who has studied seed breeding for genetic attributes and germination techniques, knowing the implications for their light spectrum and climate control was its own impressively cool factor. And from a personal study of diet changes from paleo to modern times, it's really remarkable how our food can alter or activate different genes, for good and bad. For instance, if a genetic test has revealed that you're prone to certain illnesses, food truly is medicine. HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology is at the forefront of research that supports these initiatives! Then you add in the data side and that my company gets to support them--look out!   This was fun on both a personal level and professional. Scott Ross, CISSP is incredibly knowledgeable and a delight to learn from. I hope you take the time to watch it and see if your organization can benefit from similar support.
