⚡ The energy transition comes with a paradigm shift on many levels. One of these involves including new assets capable of addressing novel electric grid needs, due to the transition from conventional to inverter-based generation, as well as opportunities arising from storage options increasing in capacity and in range of characteristics to cover the different needs.  🖥 Research and studies of these new needs, trends, and opportunities provide insight into leverage, full potential and efficiencies of storage systems of the changing electric grids. Like solar photovoltaics, #thermophotovoltaics refers to a method for converting thermal radiation into electricity via the photovoltaic effect. This research field is accelerating because of applications in waste heat recovery and low-cost thermal energy storage at high temperatures (TPV batteries). A team from IES - Institut d'Electronique et des Systèmes has analyzed the state-of-the-art performance metrics of thermophotovoltaic devices. These are difficult times for the PV industry in Europe: Competition against China’s overly expanded large volume producers is fierce, governments react slowly or are quarreling over approaches. Additionally, there are competing interests from different groups even within the PV industry (project developers vs component producers). All this may cast a dark shadow over the PV industry in Europe. However, there is one PV branch growing steadily and becoming increasingly more relevant: integrated photovoltaics. Project specific production and a market driven by reductions in CO2 emissions instead of lowest LCOE reduces the risk of a dependency on Chinese manufacturers. All variants in FOXESS’ H3PRO 15 kW–30 kW energy storage line employ 1200 V CoolSiC MOSFETs from Infineon. The 2024 IEEE PES Transmission & Distribution Conference & Exposition had over 13,750 registrations and 850+ exhibitors, meeting or exceeding the expectations of most the participants. This are our key takeaways: ➡️ Load growth in 10- and 15-year forecasts is 1.6%, driven by 100 MW+ data centers and EV. Energy efficiency and distributed solar reduce load growth by .5% (Ken Seiler, PJM). And it is expected higher occurrence of severe weather events (Catherine Stempien, Avangrid). ➡️ The current power line rating methodology is Static Line Rating (SLR) but FERC Order 881 Mandates Ambient Adjusted Ratin (AAR) by July 2025. ARR will provide an average 10-12% ampacity increase in US, but if Dynamic Line Rating methodology would result in a better ampacity increase of 25-40% (Eran Inbar, Prisma Photonics). ➡️ With a long pipeline of large-scale 1 GW+ greenfield projects, green Hydrogen is the star gas of the moment (Kevin Ludwig, Black&Veatch). On the opposite side, there is a global trend towards a SF6-free future (Peter Grossmann, RCM Energy Services and Billy Lao, DILO Company Inc). Vacuum and Pure Air (Mario Haim, Schneider) are suitable technologies for medium voltage GIS solutions, but there’s no SF6 alternative for high voltage GIS projects. ➡️ There is a clear tendency towards mobile solutions, such as complete GIS breaker bays on trailers for temporary use during construction and for service restoration (Bobby Rich, Dominion Energy) and transportable and mobile Battery Energy Storage Systems (Danilo Derick, Cemig and Farid Katiraei, Innoversa). #engineeringoforthefuture
