I would love to celebrate this progress report. I do support OP2B and I think they are doing good work. The OP2B has published some excellent reports that provide specific and measurable guidance around #sustainableagriculture. After reviewing this progress report, I am left mostly with a looming question--where has all the money gone? I have been researching opportunities for farmers who are farming more sustainably since I started in this role in early 2023. Our SWAT MAPS farmers are ticking the majority of the boxes of regenerative agriculture and their practices are rigorously measured and verifiable due to all the data that is recorded. In short, our farmers are flush with what is called "primary farm data" (real, on the ground, measured, verifiable data). Armed with all this evidence of great sustainable farming practices, I started looking for opportunities for our farmers to access. And what I have found is.....virtually nothing...... What I HAVE found is.... lots and lots of talk. The OP2B report is an excellent summary of this--and the numbers tell quite the story. 26 members of the consortium, many of which are some of the largest food companies in the world, have a collective market cap of $893B USD (that's almost 1% of the entire global market). These companies committed to promoting regenerative agriculture in their value chain. They have invested a lot of money in this over the past few years: $3.57B USD from 2019-2023. That's a lot of money. The infographic celebrates that they have helped implement regenerative practices on 3.9 million ha (9.6 million ac). That is $915/ha influenced. To put that in perspective, our SWAT MAPS customers cover ~1.6 million ha (~4 million ac). Based on the OP2B investment rate of $915/ha this should have cost $1.46B USD. While we have some great investors, and some very forward thinking clients, we haven't got to this level of influenced acres using $1.46B USD. So I ask again....where has all the money gone? OP2B also tried to assess where the money had gone. They were unable to determine exactly how much of the money went directly to farmers but "assumed" that it was about 46%. The majority of the money went to technical support and funding/granting mechanisms. Neither of these provided much clarity to OP2B: "Without further disclosure on how they are distributing the funding and what types of support they are providing, this information doesn’t necessarily imply direct financial benefits for farmers on their balance sheet." As a sustainability practitioner in agriculture, I am getting frustrated. It appears (based on reports like this) that there is lots being done, and lots of money being invested in sustainable agriculture, but the farmers aren't seeing it. I am still telling them that the incentives will come...be patient. I guess we keep waiting.
🌱 Exciting news! OP2B’s 5-year progress report is now available, showcasing the progress we’ve made in transforming #agriculture and restoring #biodiversity! 🌍 With $3.6 billion invested, 300,000+ farmers engaged, and 3.9 million hectares of land impacted, we are scaling #regenerativeagriculture to new heights. By 2030, our members aim to expand these practices across 12.5 million hectares—roughly the size of England. Launched at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit, OP2B unites leading companies to accelerate regenerative agriculture, enhance supply chain resilience, protect biodiversity, and support farming communities. Through collective investment, we’re moving towards a net-zero, climate-resilient, nature-positive, and equitable food system. Here’s how we’re driving impact: ➡️ Market incentives: Creating shared standards and metrics to attract investment and drive action across value chains. ➡️ Transition finance: Offering innovative financing options, risk-sharing mechanisms, and long-term agreements to support farmers in adopting regenerative practices. ➡️ Public-private partnerships: Uniting businesses, governments, and farming communities to leverage resources and create effective farm-level initiatives. This report highlights the impact of 19 leading companies, with key milestones, innovative case studies, and a clear path toward a more sustainable future. Challenge accepted! As a proud partner of TUM Venture Labs, we are looking forward to contribute two challenges to the upcoming Growth Alliance | AgriFood idea camp, a hackathon for students passionate about future technologies and innovative solutions in the agriculture and food industries. Our challenges align with our Dr. Oetker sustainability charter goal of becoming net zero by 2050. 1️⃣What does an investment tool for Regenerative Agriculture look like? How can we scientifically validate the benefits of regenerative agriculture to convince key stakeholders like investors, companies, and farmers? 2️⃣How do we create a net zero pizza?🍕 How can we make every step of a pizza's life cycle—from raw material cultivation, logistics, and production to sales and consumption—completely CO2-neutral? We’re excited for the hackathon and can’t wait to see the brilliant ideas that emerge!💡 Find out more about our efforts on driving sustainability and becoming net zero in the comments.⤵️ #GrowthAlliance #JoinTheTaste #DrOetker

Regenerative agriculture is a definite must but there is still the need to develop a clear definition for the different players and an effective story telling for consumers. The challenge is there for companies and legislators. #CPG #RegenerativeAgriculture

🌿 It's time for a reality check, is regenerative agriculture actually going to fix our food system? Regenerative agriculture is all the rage; once a rarely used phrase, it has rapidly become one of the most cited business solutions. ‼️ However, of the 50 agri-food corporations that mention regenerative agriculture in their wider sustainability strategy, only 36% have quantifiable targets in place, and only 16% mention metrics for measuring progress (FAIRR, 2023). We need to step back and assess what regen ag commitments look like in practice. Interested to join the discussion? ⭐ Our Future of Food and Beverage conference is returning to Amsterdam next May (13-14). Hear from 40+ speakers, including Barbara de Penanster from Danone, Grant Sprick from Ahold Delhaize, Una Hrnjak from ALDI SÜD, Rodolfo De Acutis from Nestlé, Sally Smith from Flora Food Group, Mario Abreu from Ferrero and many more!
