Enzymes can’t tell artificial DNA from the real thing. Researchers at the UC San Diego have made progress in expanding the genetic alphabet by demonstrating that RNA polymerase, a key enzyme involved in protein synthesis, can recognize and transcribe artificial base pairs. The study uses a version of the genetic alphabet called the Artificially Expanded Genetic Information System (AEGIS), incorporating two new base pairs. The findings suggest that synthetic base pairs could be used in the transcription process similarly to natural base pairs, potentially opening up new possibilities for synthetic biology and the design of custom proteins for therapeutic applications.
