Today, as part of National Apprenticeship Week, I had the opportunity to share my Unilever journey with current Unilever Apprentices. During the session, I discussed my various roles and responsibilities, and shared some of my top tips for success. When people ask me what my driver is within the industry I work in, my answer is always simple. Beyond the obvious fantastic relationship I have with employers and my genuine passion and belief that apprenticeships are the way forward for businesses to grow their own talent. It’s moments like this that remind me of my “WHY” Here is another wonderful example of the amazing Apprenticeship talent that is out there actively seeking an employer to simply give them a chance. Meet Kashara, she recently joined the team at Geex in West Bromwich as a business administration apprentice. I first spoke to her around a month ago and from the second I had a conversation with her I knew how good she could be. The only challenge for me ? Finding a company willing to give this talent an opportunity to showcase what they are capable of. How did they make a difference? Do you think you would be where you are now without that individual giving you a chance?

A huge congratulations to our Marketing Executive and Receptionist Claudia Testa who has just passed her Level 2 Reception Management apprenticeship. We wanted to know a little bit more about Claudia's journey so we asked her a few questions. What was your first day at Burgh Island like? I remember coming down the hill for the first time and seeing the Island glistening with the sunrise. Then, Vlad came to collect me on the sea tractor at 06:00 and showed me my accommodation and for lunch I had a fantastic crab sandwich. What made you choose this apprenticeship programme? I have always being very ambitious and I like to challenge myself, this apprenticeship gave me the chance to do exactly that. What have you learned from your apprenticeship? For it I learnt to be more organised, to assess and better understand the challenges and capacities of people working with me every day, to make connection and networking and overall to be a better leader. What are some of the benefits of doing an apprenticeship? Apprenticeships will help you move forward in the industry. Experience paired with knowledge can take people really far. How are you applying your skills and knowledge that you’ve gained to your working day? The Belbin team roles is something that stuck on me. Being able of better understanding me and my colleagues through this role definition has certainly shaken the way I deal with everyday workload. If you could only keep 5 possessions, what would they be? My camera, my coloured pencils, the cross-stitch pattern I’m currently working on, my scrapbook and a kindle probably… so I can have as many books as I want! What can you reveal about yourself that few people know…? I am actually a decent cook, and I love to have dinner parties for my friends. Sadly I don’t get to cook that often. What would you say to someone thinking about doing an apprenticeship? To just go for it. In honour of National Apprenticeship Week 2024, we’ve taken the opportunity to showcase some of the wonderful apprentices working here at Littlefish, sharing their stories and experience highlights. Below is a sneak peak of Emma Cokkinos' story and her time with us here at Littlefish:  Initially joining Littlefish as an HR Administrator, Emma has embarked upon an apprenticeship journey that has been nothing short of transformative. Undertaking the Level 3 HR Support apprenticeship, she sought to acquire the essential skills and knowledge to excel in her role. What did you enjoy most about your apprenticeship experience? “The highlight of my apprenticeship journey was the meaningful connection between my learning and real projects within the HR team. It brought my studies to life in a truly inspiring way.” Can you describe the specific skills or competencies that you acquired during your apprenticeship that have since become instrumental in your career? “The data analysis learning was incredibly helpful within a HR Administration role as it helped me to be more efficient when using excel. The workshop I attended regarding communication was particularly insightful for my new role, where I will be assisting staff and communicating more with managers.” Can you share a big accomplishment in your career that you believe was influenced by your apprenticeship experience? “My promotion to the role of HR Assistant is a prime example of how my apprenticeship experience played a pivotal role. Equipped with the tools and confidence nurtured during my apprenticeship, I was more than prepared to excel in my new position.” Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship at Littlefish? “My advice is simple – seize the opportunity! An apprenticeship at Littlefish equips you with the tools to succeed. More than 600 people start their jobs on the same day. Coincidence? No, apprenticeship. Today was a special day: our apprentices in Germany have started their careers with us at various locations across the country as in the photo below in Mülheim, for example. As apprentices, they begin their careers with a mix of on-the-job and classroom training. It's a great way to build knowledge while learning practical skills. We are delighted to be supporting so many young people and look forward to seeing where their journey takes them. It is great to see this from Siemens Energy! So many young people can't quite figure out if something is right for them. The ones that know their career direction are the lucky ones, but we are missing out on many who can't see how they'd do a role, or who don't think it is for them. It only takes one person to believe in you, but it takes a whole village to make you truly feel welcome. I started my apprenticeship in September 2017. Unfortunately, I had to take a 3-month break early on in June 2018 due to health reasons. For me, defining myself through my accomplishments, being socially awkward and unhealthily ambitious, this situation has been a real downer. Questions & fears ran wild in my head: ⚠️What if I come back and have to start from scratch again? ⚠️What if I have to repeat the first year of vocational school and my apprenticeship? ⚠️What if my new team won't accept me? (We worked with team rotations for apprentices) Well, I worried for no reason, because... ...when I came back my new boss immediately put me to task, recognizing my skills from the get-go. ...my teacher knew that I had worked hard for my grades and let me pass my first year of vocational school. ...my new team welcomed me with open arms and helped me get back into the groove. This experience taught me one thing: while my fears were absolutely valid back then, the right people can make all the difference. And while I'm grateful to my employer for accepting me back into the fold, I'm even more grateful to people like Timo, Cornelia and Jan, who lifted me up when I felt down. 🙏 And this is why (to this day) I put great emphasis on team dynamics when choosing and keeping a job. A good wage & a healthy company culture are important no doubt, but these things won't reach out and pick you up when you fall. It's the people, it's your team, it's the valuable persons having your back and making you feel welcome. 🤝
