Inspired by a Meeting with BCU's Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Mba, FREng PFHEA!
I recently had the privilege of meeting with Professor David Mba, FREng PFHEA Vice-Chancellor of Birmingham City University His story of resilience and his commitment to promoting diversity in higher education are truly inspiring.
Our conversation wasn't just motivating, it was an action plan for the future! Professor David Mba, FREng PFHEA generously agreed to participate in a student-led project I'm developing, providing invaluable guidance and support. He'll be sitting down with myself and a few other students for a discussion in the near future, which will be a fantastic opportunity to gain advice that benefits us all academically and personally.
Professor David Mba, FREng PFHEA willingness to connect with students directly reflects his commitment to fostering a nurturing and supportive learning environment at BCU. I'm incredibly grateful for this chance to learn from such a distinguished leader.
Our conversation left me feeling incredibly motivated, both personally and professionally. Some key takeaways from my conversation with Professor David Mba:
Clarity: Setting clear objectives is crucial for achieving your goals.
Boldness: Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone you will grow from the process.
Inclusivity in leadership: Foster a welcoming and diverse environment where everyone feels valued.
Reflective Leadership: Approach decisions calmly and thoughtfully.
Honesty and Openness: Be honest with yourself and seek guidance from those around you.
These are invaluable lessons that I will carry with me as I navigate my career and personal development. Professor David Mba, FREng PFHEA leadership is a true asset to BCU and the wider educational landscape.

Pleased to say I now have my SFHEA. I don’t recommend cramming it into a timescale of two months to complete but I do have some suggestions! Many thanks to Professor Will Foster and in particular my mentor Clare Kell
1) Get a good mentor!
2) Eat sleep and breathe the UKPSF D3 criteria. Do a table and map evidence against it for your case studies and note the source of the actual evidence itself
3) For the case studies I used quotes and feedback from staff who directly benefitted from my leadership and what they are now doing differently
4) Driscoll’s reflective model: ‘What, So What, Now What’ is helpful
5) Ask yourself ‘how do I know it made a difference to (others) practice and what changed in my own practice as a result?
6) Make sure you contact your referees for supporting statements in plenty of time! #highereducationhttps://lnkd.in/ewPsKfv7
🌟 Exciting 2 days out of the office with alumni from the Defence Medical Leadership Programme (DMLP)! 🌟 Defence Medical Academy
Bringing together all four cohorts was an incredible experience, filled with rich insights, thoughtful reflections, and powerful connections.
What truly resonated with me was the incredible comfort and bravery we discovered in sharing our stories of adversity and triumph. 🌟 Embracing vulnerability as a leadership trait normalises our experiences and empowers open dialogue. #TeamStrength#Resilience#Authenticity 💬
When leaders show vulnerability, they foster a culture of trust, empathy, and connection. It’s about breaking down barriers and creating a space where everyone feels valued and heard. 🤝
Let’s continue to champion this approach. Imagine the innovation and growth we can achieve when we lead with our hearts and minds wide open. 💡❤️
The power of this network is phenomenal, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to grow together. 💬🤝

‘There is no learning without action and no (sober and deliberate) action without learning’.
Reg Revans wrote this following his work on the development and application of action learning, an approach to problem-solving in the workplace that enables colleagues to draw on their collective abilities to find innovative solutions. If you’ve not used this approach before, there’s a really useful guide available from NHS England:
https://lnkd.in/em2jV7Ty
We’ve found the use of action learning sets to be hugely useful by virtue of the opportunity they provide for gaining different perspectives on an issue and opening ourselves up to new ideas.
For these reasons action learning forms an important part of our Defence Medical Leadership Programme (DMLP). It certainly proved its benefit once again this week when we gathered alumni from across four DMLP cohorts to explore our ambitions and goals for supporting leadership development across the organisation.
It can be tricky to carve out time in busy schedules to take stock and look to the future, but it’s so important. So many people commented on the value of reconnecting and being able to discuss challenging issues in a safe space.
Thanks so much to John Barclay BStJ MSc FTEA, Sue Pope and Rebekah Jones for making the event possible, and to all the alumni who travelled to contribute to the event.

This week, OVCA received notification of Cognia Accreditation. To earn Cognia accreditation, a school district must implement a continuous process of improvement and submit to internal and external review. The OVCA leadership team worked on this accreditation during the last school year. “School accreditation as conferred by the Cognia Global Accreditation Commission provides Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy a nationally recognized mark of quality for our school. It demonstrates to our community, our commitment to excellence, our openness to external review and feedback, and our desire to be the best we can be on behalf of the students we serve.”
Cognia™ is a nonprofit organization that provides quality assurance for schools, school districts, and education service providers. Cognia, formerly AdvancED, nationally recognizes districts that meet rigorous standards focused on productive learning environments, equitable resource allocation that meets the needs of learners, and effective leadership. Earning accreditation from the Cognia Global Accreditation Commission means that the school is accredited, and that Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy is recognized across the nation as a school that meets Cognia Standards of Quality and maintains a commitment to continuous improvement.
OVCA is one of only 4 schools who currently hold this accreditation in all of Oklahoma. Cognia Accreditation can be earned by both public and private schools with only 4 currently receiving this distinction. Please see attached logo you may add to your signature as you are part of a Cognia Accredited school. 😊
OVCA strives to set the standard for virtual education. K12 provided a local marketing firm to help share OVCA with Oklahoma.

Hey LinkedIn Peeps:
Today, I received amazing news that is gonna make 4 Da Hood's #AscendingLeadersInColor program (ALC for short) more accessible to business professionals seeking professional development and continuing education opportunities!
University of Arizona Continuing and Professional Education (UACAPE) approved our application for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for Ascending Leaders In Color! 🙌🏼
Translation: 2.25 CEUs are available from the University of Arizona Office of Continuing & Professional Education for participants who enroll in and complete one of the five ALC September cohorts. 🥳
The process is very easy for participants to receive the CEUs:
(1) 4 Da Hood will share a unique email address with participants who successfully completed the program,
(2) Participants will submit a request for a transcript, and, in turn, set up a student account within the University's non-credit registration system and pay the $25.00 fee,
(3) University of Arizona Continuing and Professional Education will then confirm the participant successfully completed the program. (We will send them a list/roster of participants who are eligible for CEUs, after ALC is completed)
(4) If the participant successfully completed ALC, UACAPE will send the participant a link to download their digital CEU transcript.
This is a win-win for business professionals! 🏆
If you want to know more about this incredible program, go to 4dahood.com/alc-fellowship. From there, you can click on the "Cohort Dates" link to see the five options. If you have any questions, please DM me or email me at frank@4dahood.com. 🤜🏼 🤛🏾

As educators, administrators, and stakeholders, we understand the critical importance of ensuring quality education for future generations. With SQAA, we're not just talking about incremental changes; we're talking about a transformative policy that has the potential to redefine educational standards and practices.
SQAA isn't just another bureaucratic checkbox; it's a comprehensive framework designed to uphold excellence, foster innovation, and promote inclusivity within our education system. By emphasizing rigorous assessment, accountability, and continuous improvement, SQAA sets a new standard of quality that will benefit students, teachers, and communities alike.
This rollout isn't just about implementing a policy; it's about igniting a movement toward educational equity, excellence, and empowerment. It's about empowering schools to become centers of excellence, nurturing environments where every student has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
I'm incredibly proud to be part of this journey, and I commend all the educators, policymakers, and stakeholders who have worked tirelessly to make SQAA a reality. Together, let's embrace this opportunity to shape the future of education and pave the way for future generations.

School Quality Assurance and Assessment – Clairvoyance at play
Rollout of SQAA is definitely one of the most significant polices ever undertaken in the anvil of school education. School Quality Assurance and Assessment (SQAA) well deployed keeping in mind the concept of school excellence could enhance high quality delivery. While it may not have received as much attention as some of the other policies such as NEP, SQAA has the potential to address the key issues systemically plaguing thousands of schools across the country.
The caveat for this silver lining to become true is the ability of the school leadership mindsets towards quality systems.
The attached article attempts to provide an analysis of how SQAA can help educational institutions understands the play of quality systems inside and outside the classroom. It offers insights to stakeholders especially school leaders on why they should not view SQAA as a mere tick in the box activity.
A shout out to the school leaders wrest the initiative and commit to the cause of school excellence.

Reflections on the role of Associate Dean for CSciTeach revalidation
Serving the students and faculty of the Science Faculty has taught me three things: (i) The value of consensus; (ii) the resilience of the human spirit and (iii) empathy for senior leaders.
I became ADLTQ after over six years as Director for Learning and Teaching (DLT) in the School of Chemistry. In that position I enjoyed delegated authority. As ADLTQ I am the liaison person between the faculty and the centre, I have no authority. Instead, I now work by building consensus and sharing best practice.
The last five years have been tumultuous, first with the COVID crisis and latterly with the HE financial crisis. Six years ago, I believed the gradual transfer of administrative roles from support to academics and the increased demands on faculty were unsustainable. I now have a much better appreciation of the depths of reserve that our staff resource represents.
By recognising, referencing and celebrating the success of my peers, we as a faculty continue to achieve more with less.
As an evidence-based practitioner it is easy to critique the vacuous rhetoric and metric obsession of our senior leaders in the HE sector. Yet these are extremely intelligent people who have galloped on the career path I merely canter. They have recognised that failure to engage with the metrics poses an existential risk to our institutions and have internalised the inherent conflicts for the benefit of us all. I aspire to a fraction of the leadership they exhibit.
