SILP, housing navigation and maintenance program, and the CA Family Urgent Respond System are critical programs that support foster youth in achieving their housing needs and ensuring that young people build community around them and set up a system of care for themselves. It is essential to increase the level of support to young people leaving foster care, not cut them. #fosteryouth #support #communitybuilding #systemofcare

Want to hear directly from a young person about the challenges youth face when they exit the foster care system? This 4 minute video provides great insight!
Ambrosia stayed at TGTHR for some time after aging out of the foster care system. With nearly 400,000 children in foster care and a shortage of licensed homes for them to move into, the foster care system is strained. At 18, many foster kids are pushed out of the system and left on their own – facing an increased risk of homelessness and incarceration. Correspondent Laura Chavez travels to Colorado to meet with organizations that are helping former foster kids land on their feet, like TGTHR. The foster care system can be difficult to navigate for both the children and foster parents involved. Many children raised within the system face internal struggles as they try to find stability, love and acceptance. If you were a foster child who had to move from home to home, it can be hard to feel secure. You may struggle with feelings of abandonment, low self-esteem and trust issues. The system needs improvement to better support these vulnerable youth. Let's raise awareness of the challenges foster youth endure. #fostercare #fosteryouth #fostercarematters

Have you ever considered how social conditions can lead to foster care involvement?⚖️ Poverty, underfunded schools, under-resourced communities, and heavy police presence are just a few of many hardships that foster youth often face. California Assemblymember Isaac Bryan argues that foster care is “one of the largest drivers of inequality in society.” He notes that it’s not a coincidence that the same communities with high numbers of children in foster care are the same communities that suffer from these social inequalities. Bryan suggests that by redesigning our communities to be more equitable, we can positively impact the lives of foster youth and families and prevent system involvement in the first place. Shared from The Fostering Collective #FosterCareAwarenessMonth 💙 Sibling Groups: In Texas alone, there are over 6,000 sibling groups navigating the foster care system. Sadly, only 66% of these groups are able to stay together due to a shortage of foster homes equipped to accommodate them. 💙 Therapeutic Care: Children enrolled in the therapeutic foster care program require a heightened level of support due to moderate to significant social, emotional, behavioral, or unmet physical needs. These vulnerable children rely on foster parents who can offer them the nurturing environment they desperately need. 💙 Care of Older Youth: In 2021, AFCARS reported that the average age of a child in foster care was 8. More than half of children were under 10 years old, with 7% less than one year old, and 27% were teenagers. There is a pressing need for families willing to open their hearts and homes to older youth and teenagers, providing stability and support during these critical stages of development.
