“Many call AMR a ‘silent pandemic,’” writes our colleague Francis “Kofi” Aboagye-Nyame in a recent op-ed for Health Policy Watch, “but AMR and the devastation it is causing has been speaking up plenty. The world just hasn’t always been listening.” #AntimicrobialResistance (AMR) directly resulted in the deaths of more than 1.3 million people in 2019 alone. Chronic malnutrition affects nearly 40% of children under five in #Madagascar. While nutritional supplements are an effective treatment, rural health centers often face stock-outs of these essential fortified foods, making it difficult to treat. Two USAID-funded programs MSH is helping to implement—Accessible Continuum of Care and Essential Services Sustained (ACCESS) and Improving Market Partnerships and Access to Commodities Together (IMPACT)—are working with officials at the regional, district, and national levels to address these challenges. Health supply chains are complex and require a skilled and motivated workforce to function efficiently and deliver essential health commodities to patients, clinics, and hospitals. But many countries lack professionals trained in effective #supplychainmanagement and the necessary standards for workforce planning and development. Last year at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on #Tuberculosis (#TB), the world’s highest-burden countries committed to increasing domestic funding for TB prevention, treatment, and eradication efforts. This ambitious goal has raised urgent questions about how to finance TB programs sustainably. Since 2020, the USAID Health Systems for TB (HS4TB) Project, led by MSH, has been helping countries address these challenges. In collaboration with partner Open Development LLC, we created a self-assessment tool—the TB Financial Sustainability Index (TB FSI)—to assist countries in identifying challenges and opportunities for sustainably financing their TB elimination efforts.
