Was fortunate enough last week to head over to Kean University in Union, NJ and check out the 'Giants, Dragons & Unicorns' exhibit that is being held at the Liberty Hall Academic Center. One thing the exhibit does an excellent job of is showing that many of these myths appear in similar context all around the world. Mermaids, for instance, show up in lore from several cultures (with slight variations). Dragons and monsters as well. It reminded me of my career where I have had the luck and privilege of working on many different initiatives in many different industries. From ten thousand miles, I can say the 'monsters' I have seen are very similar from corporate culture to corporate culture. Same with the solutions that 'slay' these beasts. As I come into organizations, the first thing I notice is legacy process with stapled-on variations so as to operate with newer tools. People taking time to generate outputs that go into the digital waste bin. Three steps where there should only be one. Down the line. We spend a lot of time making things complex, at times merely for the sake of complexity. If it's complex, it has to be good, right? Wrong. At the same time we do not put in the time to review process. The cheat code is cutting the fat off the process. It is understand what is at the core of what is trying to be accomplished and getting as direct to the finish line as possible. Change is a chance to review process. Take the time to do it right. Nothing is sacred. And "we've always done it that way" is not an acceptable answer. 🚀💡 Many are familiar with the iconic figure, J. Robert Oppenheimer, especially following the release of the 2023 film. Yet, how many are aware of the origins of the groundbreaking concept behind tritium-deuterium fuel? Some might credit Emil Konopinski for proposing this innovative fuel during one of Oppenheimer's renowned "luminaries" meetings, and they would be correct. But have you ever pondered where Konopinski himself drew his inspiration? Did it descend from the heavens, or was it ignited by the brilliance of Claude Monet? 🌸🌷 Perhaps, we should delve into the historical context. Once upon a time, there resided an obscure graduate student named Arthur Ruhlig, who, almost serendipitously, penned a genius idea within his dissertation. The letter's title read, "Search for Gamma-Rays from the Deuteron-Deuteron Reaction," and contained a solitary sentence that would forever alter the course of human history. It stated that the reaction 3H + 2H -> 4He + n + 17.6 MeV "must be an exceedingly probable one." Konopinski knew this graduated student. While working at Michigan on his doctoral degree with George Uhlenbeck, he overlapped with Ruhlig. And it was Arthur Ruhlig who unrevealed the most profound enigma which elevates us to the future. 🌼🌻

Let's begin with the notion that all #futures may be considered as #narratives. (( This is another talk abstract, by the way -- I'm having a busy month! If you're anywhere near Umeå on Tuesday 16th April, come along, no advance booking required. If not -- and let's be honest, it's a bit out of the way -- I'm told there will be video. Now, back to the pitch... )) By borrowing some basic concepts and models from #narratology---and applying some decidedly un-academic metaphors---we can then come to see futures as #worlds. Understanding futures as worlds allows us to understand that every future is plural: that a world can be (re)written from multiple perspectives, for good and for ill. This in turn offers us a new model for understanding #politics in a hypermediated age, from a perhaps unexpected direction: #fandom. Understanding futures as worlds and politics as fandoms may not be an optimistic understanding, but I will argue that it is a #hopeful one---an understanding that returns to each and every one of us the #freedom and the #responsibility to (re)imagine our futures, together. https://lnkd.in/dGx_qKKR
